Question 1st Engine Drop done..now questions

I'm patting myself on the back at this moment as I just completed my first engine drop!! It went very well.

But I have a quesiton about the gearbox oil. I went into the passenger compartment, and removed the cover to the footwell. I then went to pull back the rubber boot covering the allen screw to disconnect the shift coupler from the trans. What to my suprise happens, but gearbox oil gushes out of the boot. There was a good 1/2 quart.

Was I supposed to drain the gearbox fluid?? Was there just a bad seal on the nose of the gearbox. I've never heard of this, and am a bit confused now. Even with the rear end up high, I don't think this should have lelaked out. What if I was parked on a steep hill??

Any advice?

You may have had a bad seal that was causing oil to collect near the coupler. The shifter rod seal may need replacement.

Sounds like the input shaft seal. If you have the tranny/engine out it should be easier to replace. You have to pry the old seal out and drive the new one in with a pipe of suitable size. The seal can be ordered from our host for a couple of $.

I had the same issue. After replacing this seal during the tranny rebuilt it's bone dry in there.

Additionally, you may want to replace all the tranny seals: output shafts (2), input shaft, and the guide tube o-ring. I had the same problem as you when I dropped my engine and decided to be safe rather than sorry and replace all the seals.

Although I have a G-50, I had a similar problem - tranny fluid in my tranny tunnel. The shifter shaft seal was not seated properly, so the motion of shifting was shipping t-fluid into the coupling cover and then into my tunnel.

Definitely replace your shifter/selector shaft seal and as Dave mentioned, it's an easy time to replace all the seals.
