76 A/C compressor leak, can it be fixed.
I had some dye put into my A/C system this weekend to find out if there were any leaks. Come to find out its leaking at the compressor. It seems to be leaking at the shaft connecting the pulley to the compressor. I assume its a seal. Is it possible to fix this? Which type of compressor is used on a 1976 911s?

1976 911s probably had the old York compressor, depending if it was a dealer install or factory install the size of the compressor will vary (Factory put the truck compressor in while after market used the smaller york). You can purchase a new seal kit to reseal the compressor, but since you must remove the compressor and evacuate the system you should upgrade the compressor to a Sanden, seltic, or seiki rotary compressor.
Check the Technical bulletin on this forum. There is several article on compressor upgrade. |

Whats the average cost of a upgraded compressor? I saw some for about $450. I can't see paying that when my old one blows at 60 deg.

I seen them advertised in some of the Porsche magazines for under $300.00. Try Vertex. You can try ebay, or perhaps there is person on this board that is removing their a/c unit. I know SOUK was selling his system off his 76.
Stick with R12 if you can. |

If you gonna switch out the compressor replace the receiver/drier at the same time.

gee, lots of us have compressors sitting around. I removed mine this weekend after the condensor sprang a leak. Worked relatively well until then. Here's what it looked like until I removed it.
![]() that D@mn mounting bracket for the compressor won't come off. One of those bolts has resisted gallons of liquid wrench and every bit of my strength. Now I'm gonna have to buy one of those nifty new wrenches that grab the sides instead of the corners... Of course I'm also ordering new heater hose since it didn't survive the procedure.

Mike: Have you tried PB Blaster? The stuff is magic, and makes Liquid Wrench look like water! Most auto parts stores carry it (I buy mine at Pep Boys). Soak the part really well, and let it sit overnight.

Terry,
Check with these folks, http://www.compressor-intl.com/aboutus/index.htm every compressor known to mankind goes thru their doors. I think that a core is $80.00 (I dont recall, since its been approx 18 months since I last spoke to them), the prices varied from approx $220 to $320 (with core). Why take a chance with an unknown used unit when you can get a remanufactured, newer style unit w/warranty for the same or less... This is not a slam on anyone, but my understanding is that the worse thing you can do to a compressor is to have little or no activity on it...something about seals drying?? Good Luck, Bob BTW - my old York is still hangin in there, my hoses on the other hand...well... ![]() |

I think the current issue of Tweeks catalog list a remanufacture York Compressor for under $200.00. You must remove your old clutch or buy a new clutch since I don't think the compressor comes with a clutch. There is also a $100.00 core charge. Just return your old core for the $100.00
