Axle boot clamp part # - 79SC

Katalog says the boot clamps are part # 999-512-315-02

That part is NLA and superseded by 999-512-486-00 according to several sources (including our host at one time, but part # search on Pelican for the original part # now returns 37 similar but not exact matches).

Anyway I ordered the new 999-512-486-00 and to my dismay they are far too big to fit:
  • boot diameter is about 60mm (first pic)
  • original clamps are about 65mm diameter at the largest setting (at right in 2nd pic)
  • the new clamps are about 75mm at the smallest setting (left in 2nd pic)

I don't trust regular zip ties to have sufficient strength/durability for this application. I have some metal ones but it feels like their edges are sharp and could cut into the boot rubber.

Can anyone on the forum identify the right part # for this application?

Boot diameter about 60mm:

Old and new clamps are very different sizing - new on left are about 75mm at smallest setting, old at right are about 65mm at largest setting:

I would just get the size you need from Belmetric: https://belmetric.com/7mm-band-adjustable-ear-clamp-oetiker-163-stainless-00-cv-band7/?sku=CV62BAND7&gclid=Cj0KCQiA4uCcBhDdARIsAH5jyUl-CHYjziE9pzWnEf3mn-bzxJzv0jVnz00_Q8IHR_paWYoG-cwB0p4aAkwQEALw_wcB

For a dollar apiece you can get a few sizes if you aren't sure.

Great tip, thx "thetorch" -

I ordered 8 each of the inner and outer clamps, so I'd have in stock for future CV boot replacements. These are adjustable over a few mm range, so should fit.

Parts are super cheap but yikes on the shipping to Canada...

EDIT: CORRECTION - do NOT get the 30mm clamps for the inner boots, I didn’t measure right and they are too small. Instead get the 34mm version.

Doubtless a metal band is stronger and more durable. But I have had fine results on my race car CVs using zip ties. Never had one fail, inner or outer clamp. Perhaps good to know in a pinch if one's preferred piece isn't handy.
