Adding a sunroof...tutorial

Has anyone documented the replacement of a non-sunroof clip with a sunroof clip?
I'm considering such an idea and would like to see what I'm in for.
Email me a link if you have one...

Speedo, see if you can get in contact with Rod Emory, the 356 guy. He's in LA and done a bunch of roof swaps.
He may be able to point you in the right direction.

I dont know how the Porsche roof skin is attached, but I just removed a sunroof skin (aftermarket sunroof) and replaced it with a stock skin on a 72 240z. Lots of spot welds and some body lead had to be removed. Not hard just time consuming.

sunroof swap

I figured I had this coming. I realize it is weight in the wrong place. I also realize that it interferes with rollbars and helmets. And I realize that most people want to get rid of the sunroof, vs add one...I get it. But, I am only 5'10" and I don't have AC for the summer, and actually like cranking the heat in the winter and opening the sunroof. I am guessing that the easiest way to swap is to measure very carefully and cut the A-B-C pillars in the exact places and weld it in. I was curious about the process though as I don't have the factory tools that define the front and rear window openings.

I already have an email in to Emory on a different subject. I'd like to get him to respond to that one first. In the mean time, if someone stumbles across a link, send me a PM or an email please.

Speedo - from the cheap seats, how about you keep the slick top and spend the money you would have used to chop into the car, weld, get it perfect and then have to paint, wire it up, install switches and new headliner, and instead - just add electric air conditioning...

I am actively ripping out my AC parts to install the Retro system in the next year or so...

I sure wish there was a way to give you the sunroof in my car. I have owned my 911 for 27 years now, and I have opened it three times! Once at Acadia National park in Maine, once in Vermont, and once in Monterey, CA. I hate wind noise, and I never have the windows down. Either the AC is blowing or the heater. I owned a 914 for 25 years and I have had my fill of convertibles and open air driving.

Good luck with your quest. Keep reading the forum. You will find someone removing the sunroof, and they will likely be happy to have you haul it off. If I could get rid of mine, and not spend many thousands of dollars I sure would.

Gosh, that would make sense...if I lived in SoCal or TX. Reality is that I live at 8200 ft in CO and have no use for AC. And most of my spirited drives with friends are at an even higher elevation on Peak to Peak highway between Nederland and Estes Park. I do use heat...but my windows are my AC. And I have 325 days a year of sun, so I look forward to seeing out a sunroof at the mountains. Different strokes I guess....

Welding up the pillars doesn't intimidate me, car is overdue for paint, only one switch to wire up, and I have done plenty of headliners.

Let me know if you are local to CO and have a sunroof top clip complete.

Speedo - I get it. Spent many many hours blasting the back roads from Lakewood to Boulder to visit my brother while he was a CU. That 66 had windows, side vents and the wing vents... would kill to have it back. We had a version of the Gumball Rally up those roads with a 928 and 2002tii owned by my brother's friends. Scared the crap out of me more than once on those roads. Recommend you reach out to Rick at Weekend Rides...
