17"Fuchs on 82 SC Targa
Hello fellow 911's,
I am currently rebuilding a 82 SC Euro Targa, and would like to fit 17' Fuch Wheels on it. What would be the ideal offset and size of tyres to fill out, but not go wider than the wheel arches? Also I dont want to widen or roll the fenders. Need help pls. TIA |

Fuchs never made 17" rims for the 911, only 14", 15" and 16", with various offsets.
You can get a number of aftermarket Fuchs design rims in 17" for the 911. I would suggest the Rota Fox 7.5"x17"ET36 with 225/50-17 and 9"x17"ET16 with 255/45-17 tires. They will fit SC and Carrera from 1974 to 1989 with the 9" rear quarter panels. The downside of the cast aftermarket rims compared to the forged original Fuchs rims, are that a 17" Fuchs copy weigh twice as much as a 16" Fuchs original. The weight difference has a very noticeable adverse effect on acceleration and handling. The upsides of 17" rims are that they are cool looking and have a much larger selection of tires. I have the above mentioned Rota Fox wheels and tires on my 911, and I would have changed to 16" if I did it over again. I would have had 951 wheels up front, 8"x16"ET 23.3 with 225/50-16 and 9"x16"ET15 with 245/45-16.

Does Rota still make their Fox replica? I've had (fast) friends with those wheels, and they've been happy with them. There are a couple other companies that have made 17" Fuchs replicas. Euromeister, Maxilite, and another company whose name escapes me at the moment. I think Maxilite is the only one still making them (?), if OP is looking for a new set.

17" fuchs are available, and light. Even better than the old ones.

First: everybody is free to modify the own car on it's personal taste and intention.
But: I'll never get what a bigger and heavier wheels should make better on those cars except the look and stance - and still this look looks wrong on a G body car. The ride construction is oriented on 15" and 16" rims. 16" are the preferred size due the tire is more stretched/fixed on the rim than on 15" wheels with thicker/fattier tire sidewalls where the rubber can move much more (which is undesired of course!). For performance improvement everybody chases for weight reduction, power improvements and tunung. But on the most important connection between the car and the ground we're talking now about bigger wheels and more weight? Seriously? Even the new 17" Fuchs rims are less than 3lbs/1kg heavier than the 16"s - it's no argument for me. Just my 2cts. Thomas

Yeah, I know what you mean. I had VERY heavy 17" Carrera Cup fakes on the SC. I loved the look, but it felt like I was driving around with the handbrake/emergency brake on. Once I swapped back to the factory fitted 16" wheels it felt like a 20hp power increase and snappier handling. I think the 17" wheels will make good wall art in my new garage LOL

The new Fuchs 17" rims are not for made for 911, but for 964 and 993, with 55mm offset. You would need insane spacers to make those fit on a 911.

Again it is the tire od is far more important
If you really care about performance go w/ 15s here's a 41lb ft gain over an efficient 17 w/ 15s ![]() here's an efficient 16 vs an efficient 15, the 15s have a 20lb-ft edge ![]() here's 15 vs stock 16s, ~38lb-ft extra for the 15s ![]()

Just for information the Euromeister are 19Lbs for the 7x17 and 20Lbs for the 9X17
I use 215/45 at front and 245/40 at the rear. They are still available in Europe. Both cars on the same setup. Left 84 and at the right 82 ![]() ![]() Cheers Engelbert
