Very cool movement going on there IMO. Assuming the $$ spent is realistic and you don't have guys painting 'faux' patina on their cars.

The husband of one of my wife's friends does these for fun and the 30's rod he showed me was waaaaaay cool. not one expensive part on it but it did run nicely.

I'm thinking of going that way with my 71. Just leave the paint the way it is, I have the gold front and rear bumpers. I'm thinking of sticking some worn seats in it and leaving the interior stripped. Im also thinking of having the steel wheel's widened to 7". I also have a old pair of talbots that I think would look cool on the fenders.

Of coarse I plan on dropping in a 3.2 and all new suspension goodies.

I have my 73.5 that I think looks like a very good driver so this may be fun to do just to tear up the gravel roads with.

Well, in true rat style, this 79 sc we built for a buddy will someday be painted but is being enjoyed as is for now. Ratting this car is part of the journey, not the destination...

but I am building a dumb BMW 2002 rat though.

What is even MORE COOL, and less lead-n-follow than the rat rod movement is the "hood ride" Google hoodride.

like this:

more about wera and patina, less about flat black and red. -both about old school speed stuff, though.

we've batted around the idea of doing Aaron's '67 S this way..

Yeah, this is getting popular, even in TV shows. The "I'm down and out and sooooo laid back I don't wash or fix my car" look is hot.

I wouldn't paint it....I think it looks great like that.

My whole problem with "rat" mentality is that a lot of pure absolute trash is passed off as authentic or quality...

To me the hotrod mentality has meant doing more with craft and what you have around than with cubic dollars. Its a journey, not a destination.

Not to say cubic dollars cant build cool cars, because its what i do for a living turning cubic dollars into cool cars...

Its also unfortunate that so many "rat rods" are basically formulaic poorly-build dangerous junk.

Not to go off topic too much, but for my personal money and time, (after my 911, and alfa that is) this is what we like building, think channeled hotrod meets oldtime lightweight BMW:

We took 80mm out of the middle of the body, thusly lowering the roof and upper body that amount over the floorpan without changing ground clearance at all. Also took some of the visual tuck out of the sides of the car bulkifying it a bit...as well as building the requisite Alpina type fender flares

To us it is a way to coalesce our random ideas that customers either wont approve or basically dont "get" into one cool project....it will at some point be painted, more than likely silver even though its played out and too common on modern cars it will look killer on this ...but , it will be labeled a rat rod in the meantime.. until its done I guess.

+1
I think that "rat rod" stuff is a way for people to validate their junk. Kind of like some modern art....pass it off as legitimate and you might build a following. And it doesn't always take a lot of money to build some neat stuff....just some ingenuity (intelligence) and craftsmanship (discipline).

Hard to believe it started like this....
