Turning engine for valve adjustment
1. With the spark plugs in even with all the shims out can not get the engine to turn, it will start to move a little then the belt will slip even though it is really tight. Is this a sign im going to have to remove all the plugs to do it. I read folks do it with the plugs in.
2. Also when facing the alternator/cooling fan we turn in clockwise direction. Many people mention when facing fron of engine etc, but wanted to check that when facing the fan its clockwise. |

Cold engine, engine in Neutral, Remove spark plugs, belt/pulley tight to avoid belt slippage, only turn Clockwise….facing the engine fan.

well? do not remove the spark plugs.there is a possibility that some carbon build up could fall inside preventing the valves to close completely. That would give you false reading-adjustment
Are you sure you have no gear in ?? report.. Ivan

Old trick was to put car in 5th gear and leave one wheel on the ground, or bolt a rod to it that hits the ground at an angle to hold the wheel locked.
Turn other wheel backwards, this turns engine….a lot easier, and can be done from under car. Rich |

While you turn the nut clockwise, apply pressure on the outside of the belt on the drivers side to keep it from slipping. Very important is to make sure none of your fingers end up on the inside of the belt where the turning of the pulley can get them between the pulley and the belt- yeah, imagine losing fingers that way!
Squeezing both sides of the belt together, again only on the outside also works.

Squeeze the belt with your hands.
Or, use one of these: https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-3680-Ratcheting-Wrench-Serpentine/dp/B0002WSFTO The serpentine belt wrench kit is perfect for turning the crank pulley instead of the alternator shaft. I prefer this method. It's very easy. |

Not sure what crank pulley you have, but on most just put a 19mm wrench on the crank bolt and turn it over. Why mess with the fan pulley at all?

I just turn the wheel slowly while in 4th or 5th gear on my 914-6. My engine faces the opposite direction so easier than trying to use a wrench on the fan belt bolt.

My go-to for a valve adjustment tool is the extended length ratcheting wrench. This assumes you don't have or have already ditched the multi-belt crank pulley.
