Removing studs from case perimeter
I've got my engine completely disassembled. In reading and watching too many engine assembly videos, it's apparent I need the mating surfaces clean and smooth. The case parting line looks good to my eye but should I be removing the roughly 27 studs in the case half in order to run some 600 grit sandpaper along there? Wasn't sure how much of a PITA this was going to be or if there are any hazards to avoid. It appears this is the first time the case has been split. I do plan to remove the studs from the chain boxes so I can run those surfaces over a flat surface.

No sand paper, just draw a razor blade perpendicular to the surface with care .
You will know when it is clean . Do this to all mating surfaces , look at the sealant thread for advice on goo and sealant . Ian

Takes about 20 minutes, if you have one that won’t budge try tightening a tiny bit and then loosen. If it still won’t budge use a little heat. You shouldn’t have that much difficulty. 600 grit is a little too fine just my opinion.

Unless you are replacing those case studs with cadmium plated (bling) studs.

If you don't have a reason to remove the studs, e.g., sealing surface gouges, then don't. You're just making extra work that can cause even more extra work. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

With all the studs out, you can get all the sealant off nice and easily. Don't use anything silly like a flap disc etc.. only do it by hand. Yes, removing the studs is not really necessary and it will add a lot of time, but you will find it so much easier to clean the sealing surfaces without having to navigate around a stud every couple of inches .

no need to remove those studs at all...clean the surface with a Scotch brite and carb cleaner..gently with the razor blade....
