I been attempting to repair the heating system on my 85 Targa.
Found a couple of things that need some attention. 1. The blower fan on top of the motor makes some noise. It appears that the bearing on the fan end of the motor is bad. Is it possible to disassemble the unit and replace just the bearing? 2. The footwell blowers are not working. The additional relay is not energizing (no power on relay terminals 85 and 86, jumpering terminals 30 and 87 turn on the fans). According to the drawings in the Bentley manual and a D-Size drawing, the power to the unit comes from the manual heater control mounted on the dash. Has anyone had any luck fixing such a unit? Plan to get back at the project this week. Thanks in advance |

Try these http://www.type-911.co.uk/images/exhausts/heatingtech1.jpg http://www.type-911.co.uk/images/exhausts/heatingtech2.jpg http://www.type-911.co.uk/images/exhausts/heatingtech3.jpg http://www.type-911.co.uk/images/exhausts/heatingtech4.jpg http://www.type-911.co.uk/images/exhausts/heatingtech5.jpg http://www.type-911.co.uk/images/exhausts/heatingtech6.jpg As I recall the footwell blowers won't operate unless the engine fan is operating so sort this out first and you may not have another problem. I don't think the bearing in the fan is easily replaceable - it's some sort of self centring one as I recall. After mucking abouk cleaning and lubing it I bought a new motor (although it's still in its box at the moment!) Good Luck

I have a similar problem. My footwell blowers only run on the # 2 speed. There are two cam switches in the box between the seats, both function. Not sure why speed 3 doesn't work. The footwell blowers seem to get power thru the engine compartment fan-the footwell blowers only will run when the heat levers are moved up from dead off. I suspect that there is a resistor pack somewhere.
Supposedly you can grease the bearing in the e/c fan and extend its life somewhat.

The blowers (all 3) won't come on until one of the two red levers between the seats are pulled up. There is a contact under the cover. When the red lever is pulled up the heaters are turned on via the heater relay in the engine compartment on the left. Don't forget the fuses that are at each motor in the wiring harness. Also while mine ran some at all 4 positions of the rotary switch 0-3, some others as noted above only get operation on certain settings. Those motors are very susceptible to locking up.
