Using Obenauf's Oil on Already Cracked Seats?

Anyone have experience? I had a cracked chair that I tried to bring back, and as soon as the fibers got wet, they all tore along the pre-existing cracks. Don't want to make the seats worse than they already are.

Thanks.

dunno re that product or your... uh cracks, but some products will make smaller cracks seem to vanish

you could not wt. the seat for a while after tmt., or figure the cracks will let go sooner or later anyway

I wonder how many people clicked thinking it was about cracked valve seats....

I use Obenauf on the seats in my 911. It is an excellent product to condition the leather, but I doubt it will help much with your cracks. I do not know of any leather conditioner that will repair cracks.

You may want to look at recovering the cracked areas of your seats. Good luck.

I only use Obenaufs. It will help soften up the fabric to reduce further cracking but will not do anything for existing cracks

It's an excellent preventative and restorer of finish, but it won't fix cracks. It mutes their appearance but won't eliminate them.

Are you sure the cracks are in the leather itself, or just in the surface dye? I had a 928GT that the seats had been dyed so many times it looked like paint, and had cracked creases. I used a solvent to strip the seats down to the raw leather and they were actually okay underneath. I did a lot of conditioning on the leather and used Leatherique dye to refinish them. They actually turned out quite good.

Gordon... Once leather fibers loose their natural adhesion to each other, no oil or cream is going to restore that adhesion. As you know, adding a liquid (or cream) makes matters worse by helping the fibers detach from one another. A way to prevent cracks from probagating is to gel epoxy a leather patch on that's longer than the existing crack. Patching doesn't look good but then neither does a cracking seat.

i used this to recondition, restore and then redyed my seats. it makes the leather softer then u can use their crack repair then repeat the conditioning. It's good stuff, just bought another bottle of the oil rejuvenator and cleaner.

what should I do with my seats, any recommendations? Just acquired an '84 3.2 and has a very nice champagne and black leather interior. Here are the seats... should I do anything to them (clean/condition)? leather doesn't feel dry and seats still feel pretty comfortable but obviously has some significant cracking...

Obenaufs is junk. Just another claimed 'miracle in a botttle' that isn't. Save your money.

There are any number of products for "refinishing leather" seats. This vid shows one of them. Have not used this stuff so not saying it's good or bad... it's the idea. The question is how to handle perforated areas? Another question is how does leather feel once it's been refinished with anything? Am inclined to think there's a cost for making seats look good again and that cost is the feel that genuine, uncoated leather offers. Were I going this route, would definitely test the coating on a loose piece of leather before putting it on the seat leather. Might feel like vinyl.
