Newbie from New Zealand

Hi everyone, thought it was time to do the usual first post and introduce myself and my car. My name's Jimmy, I'm 33 and live in the South Island of New Zealand with my wife and son. I've been a long time lurker of this site and love reading about all your great cars and advice.

Like elsewhere, the air cooled market has gone a bit mad here with prices going skywards and good cars getting snapped up pretty quickly. Due to the size of NZ it's also a pretty small pool to start with compared with many other countries. I limited my search to an SC or Carrera but they are few and far between on the open market.

After a long time searching I finally got a car that I'm pretty happy with. It's a NZ new delivered car (which is pretty hard to get here as many are imports) 1984 Carrera 3.2. It's a rand prix white sport edition with the usual extras of spoiler package/shocks etc and a quite interesting interior of burgundy with cloth Porsche script inserts. It came with a really good history of owners and documented maintenance with some bigger expenses already taken care of which was a bonus. Pretty original apart from a few small things and has a nice note with the stainless sport muffler on it.

I've done a few things already including lowering slightly (although NZ new which means it would've come in at Euro height it had been raised above this). Added bump steer kit, H & R rear spacer adapters, seine gate shift kit (already had factory short shift), rear rotors, pads and changed fluids/filters. Next jobs will likely be trying to get a plain decklid that I'll paint to match so I can switch between the two, getting a new 'smile' and probably straightening up the rear lower valance and just looking forward to getting in more drives.

It's my first Porsche after a history of classic bikes as it fits in with family life a bit more than motorcycles for us presently. My wife and I have just returned from a road trip from coast to coast (east to west and back) and really enjoyed the car, even though we got typical west coast (NZ) weather which was pretty heavy rain. Here's some pics from the trip...

first alpine lake of trip Lake Lyndon

heading towards the alpine and the alpine pass over to the west coast

second alpine lake, Lake Brunner on west coast side of alps

our stop for the night and great view from hotel

on the way home in the alps with a New Zealand native alpine parrot, a Kea

pointing towards home after a great trip

cheers, Jimmy

Thanks, not too high, was 150 something km when I got it and did fluids etc the other day at 160km so just hit 100 miles (speedo in km being nz new). Has had full engine rebuild with receipts etc in file prior to my purchase plus gear box freshen and suspension work. Also had electrics, distributor etc all done too, so in pretty good health now. The recent money spent with records was a big plus at purchase so hopefully a lot of the bigger dollar stuff done for a while now. Scenery in South Island really makes for some great drives. Cheers

Nice car and pics.
What is that bird in the parking lot?
I too planned to keep both lids and swap back and forth, but with the risk of damaging the paint at every swap, I've stayed with the wing and sold the plain lid.

Thanks all, bird is a New Zealand alpine parrot called a Kea-they're cheeky things that love picking at car and motorbike rubber! under their wings is orange so they look pretty cool. Will likely leave basic deck on for a while once I do one-really want to keep current deck as is with it being factory. Looking forward to some more scenic drives when time allows and I'll throw some more pics up. Cheers

Cheers guys, wasn't sure on the matched wheel centres to start with as you get so used to seeing black centres but they're growing on me now.

Same color wheels here and like you I didn't like them at first but they've grown on me and now they make the car just a bit more interesting. An original option. Here is an idea for the rather plain white center caps, fill in the recessed areas with satin black, it provides a fine outline of the crest an circle.
