Back up light switch location
I can't find the location of the back up light switch on my 82. Is it one of the 2 switches
on the brake master cylinder? Thanks. |

Should there be continuity at the switch? I'm getting continuity and 1.2 ohms.
Trying to see why fuse 11 keeps burning out and turn signals stop working. |

Continuity only when in reverse. Power runs in and out through the 14 pin connector. Then the wire goes to the tail bulb. So the switch completes the circuit when engaged.

So I'm getting continuity when the car is in neutral, so a bad switch?

My turn signal flashers stop working and fuse 11 keeps blowing when I backup. I replaced the fuse and in drive the flashers work. My emergency flasher also work.

Will any transmission oil come out if I replace the back up switch?

You may have some loose connections on that switch. I had a wire loose and soldered on a new bullet connector to fix the issue. My symptoms were just always-on reverse lights, so different than yours.

Do those bullet connectors just pull out?

On mine they just pulled out of the switch, yes.

Did you test the switch first before replacing it? How did you go about doing it? I'm getting continuity when I put a multi-meter on it while the car is in park.

Do you know the rest of your wiring is ok? I ask because if the switch went bad to the point of it always having a connection as though it was stuck in reverse then all that would happen is your backup lights are always on. You can even test the circuit making tour hands and 2 wires the switch. Hook up two long wires to the bullets OR tape them together and check your reverse lights are on. If you are getting a blown fuse then something in the turn signal circuit is grounding out. I don't believe the reverse shares another fuse, but don't have the fuse diagram on hand.

If I replace fuse #11 which is for the flashers and backup lights the flashers work, as soon as I put the car in reverse the flashers stop working and blows the fuse. I haven't checked if the back up lights continue working after the flashers stop working, I'll need someone to verify that as I'm pulling out. I removed my tail lights today and checked out the wiring and they seem good.

Unhook the bullets from the switch. Tape them together. Replace fuse 11. Turn car on, but not ignition. Walk to back and check lights. If on then backup wiring is good. Fuse should also not blow. If fuse blows you have an issue I the back lights wiring.
Most likely when you go to reverse it is pushing against the bad switch and grounding out the switch causing the fuse to blow.

I'll try that thanks. I have also read that you can remove the 14 pin harness connector at the rear fuse panel and jump #5 and 6 pin.
