Reference sensor
Was working on car and noticed plug for reference sensor looked broken. When touching it the rest of the plug fell apart. Put pins back into the connector, need to replace but car does start. Would it start if the pins were not in good contact with the connector?

Come to find out I don't think I had a good connection. Car starts and runs well now. Anyone have an old sensor I can splice the male plug to the sensor so it won't vibrate out while driving until I can get time to install a new one. I've heard that job is a pain.

Update: Come to find out the black wire is the shielded wire, so I originally had the black and brown swapped. Had to pull back the boot on the cars wiring harness to find this out. Was able to find new male connector and since the engine sensor wire seemed a bit short I made a 4" pigtail and spliced the pig tail to the sensor harness. Probably a whole lot easier than replacing the sensor and definitely a whole lot cheaper. So I retained the original bracket and plug system on the engine. Maybe this will help someone in the future.

You can get the BMW sensors cheaper than porsche ones on this site.
For when you get around to changing them, i bought 2 a few years ago and have not gotten around to changing them out. They have gone up in price since then. And one day i will tackle that. |

Do you have a P/N or direction on a source for the BMW sensors?

The BMW sensors do not come with a new grommet, but the CHT sensor does come with a new grommet with two additional holes for the wires for the reference and speed sensors. Since VM testing has shown that only the reference sensor in my ‘84 911 has failed, I’m tempted to replace only that sensor. Has anyone had experience slicing the grommet to replace just the reference sensor? Thank you
