RSA revisited
Finally dug out Morgan's book on the 964RS. The Euro version was indeed a cool car. Rechipped engine (260hp/325Nm), matched P/C, lightened flywheel. Sport was standard verion with three variants: Carrera Cup, Touring, and Competition. Basically it is a stripped out car (no sunroof, electic mirrors or seats or windows, no central lock, and most of the wiring harness pulled). Recaro seats, no sound insulation, thinner side glass, special seam welding, no underbody sealer (and a shorter corrosion warranty). Suspension was stiffer and lower, Turbo brakes. Touring variant had a bit more amenities. Sport was 0-60 in 5.4s, 162 max speed. The Euro RS was *not* sold in the US due to thin glass and lack of door beams. 2051 made. Touring version (heaviest) was 2866lb, others 2755lb.
The RS American was only for the US and Canadian market. Many of the weight savings features of the Euro RS, but the RSA was $10K *less* than a stock 964. Euro RS was $20K *more* than a stock 964 since is was a hommologation special for racing whereas the RSA was a low specification variant of the regular model. RSA had no AC, PS, sunroof or rear seats but did have air bags. Slightly stiffer suspension (equivalent to the M030 option for the C2). RSA used the *standard* 3.6 engine. Weight was 2955lb compared to 3083 for a C2. 816 built. |

Thanks for the info.
One correction, the American version of the C2 had a curb weight of 3031lbs. My car weighed 3029 with 1/2 a tank of gas when I was last getting it cornerbalanced.

You might like to read the article on the 964RS in 911 and Porsche world.
The one I'm reading at the moment (not sure what month it is as the mag is at home) has a article on the new GT3 plus '73RS articles too. Edit: A guy I know has one and changed the exhaust system to something even better and says it's a real beast now. Last edited by Bill Douglas; 06-08-2003 at 07:18 PM.. |

I just happen to have that issue Bill. That must be a Euro version, not the RSA. And what about the 993RS? Yowza!

I spoke with a guy at a gas station with a 993RS and he said he had just upgraded from a 964RS (Jeez, lives of the rich and famous). He said the 993RS was faster but he still couldn't get as fast a lap time as he was getting with the 964RS.
And yup, the 993RS sure is cute. |
