ROW 1978 930 lag question.

HI,

A friend of mine said he use to own a stock ROW 1978 930 that he purchased in 1984. He claims that his car had zero lag.

He also added that the U.S. versions had the lag, but the ROW's did not.

And I believe the 930 used a KKK 3ldz that originally saw use in diesel trucks. Really primitive by todays standards.

I find this hard to believe as I have owned many non-Porsche turbo cars throughout the years and even with modern engine management I have felt lag.

We are good friends. But, it bugs me that he swears by this.

And yet he mentions severe Snap oversteer.

He swears of zero lag. I am hoping someone can point me to definitive data that I can share with him.

We’ve argued about cars seems like forever.

Thanks

Maybe the car he referenced had high end engine/turbo work done. I've had two 1982 ROW Canadian 930s and they both lag, followed by best to be hanging on tight. Part of the charm.

The stock USA '78 had a more restrictive heat exchanger system (Y-pipe) than the Euro engine (J-pipe) but both used the same 3LDZ turbocharger. Full boost for either system was 4200rpm.
So no, the Euro engine did not have zero lag, or even less lag than the US system.
Could be your friends car is modified, but even then there is lag. Very easy to test. Drive the car and short shift to 2nd gear. At a steady 2000rpm cruise slam your foot to the floor. I guarantee you there will be lag.
