There is a small difference between the 74 Carrera and the 73 RS tail shown above - no license plate lights on the 74.

Here's the full view for comparison to the 73. The underside of mine is black, not painted. You can also see a white plug in the hole on the left side for the wire to the license plate light.

Thank you. Very helpful! I incorrectly assumed that the originals were hand laid cloth.

Where the '73s steel framed with the glass bonded and the '74s ALL fiberglass?

Most '73 RS and all (I think!) '74 Carrera are steel frame. Some '73 RS are aluminum frame. And I recall some sort of prototype all-aluminum duck. I don't believe there was ever an all-fiberglass factory duck for either year.

1974 Ducktails can come with and without licence light cutouts. If they have a cut outs frame. The factory screwed small blockoff plates in place to close them off.

There are also 2 differant main shells. A 1974 will always have a steel frame.

Then there is 1973-4 vintage fiberglass mat. And later NOS pieces that have a finer filiment glass mat.

Here's a few pics of mine. It looks like there might be ahand laid patch where the factory attached the curved part of the frame for mounting the latch.

I don't understand this comment. All ducktails & early whaletail's were hand made.

That includes 'laying' in / placing ... the fiberglass mat (whatever type was used) into the plug (mold).

I think it is a given that duck tails were hand laid/made units. Interest was "woven cloth" vs "chopped matting" for the tail portion. I have seen it both ways.

Was there ever an all fiberglass factory duck for any year air-cooled 911?

Center riveted section is steel ,not aluminum, did check.
lover inner section has foam to make it stronger.
Would this be a Prototype RS duct tail??? Opinions please...No number stamping on the center section.

Don't mean to revive an old thread, but were you (356preA) or anyone else able to determine the origin of the ducktail with the non-curved latch bar? Looking at an early '74 Carrera that has a ducktail like that. Outside of this post and that car, that is the only one I've seen with that frame. Is it genuine or a reproduction?
