60 Years of the 911 Video

Porsche just made this to promote the new (992) 911 S/T. But it's also an interesting look at 911 drivers through the decades. And by 'interesting,' I mean... well, something I'm not sure I understand. As someone who was alive for the duration of the 911's history, I'm not clear on exactly where I'd place myself in this scheme of driver/owners.

Still, it's a fun clip.

Back in 1967 my dad was ready to buy a new family car. I begged and whined for him to go look at the 67 911S and he actually did go for a test drive, and I got to ride in the back seat with an ear to ear smile on my face.

A 1967 911 was the perfect family car for a family of four with two teenage boys! Well, maybe not. He bought a Olds Delta 88 with real back seats, and great air conditioning, but I still lusted after the 911.

In 1974 I had been working one full time, and two part time jobs to earn the money for a 1974 914 2.0 and I just could not stretch the budget to 911 prices. I ordered my 914 to my specs and it took them 6 months to deliver it.

Many years later in 1995 my wife said I needed a car with air conditioning. So I bought my 85 911 and sadly sold my 914. I miss the 914, but I am glad I have not been paying the storage fees to keep it.

After 28 years of owning my 911 I love it more than ever. I have put 110,000 more miles on it since buying it. Almost every component has been worked on with constant upgrades and maintenance.

I returned from a 3,500 mile road trip to Palm Springs just last month. The car ran like a Porsche, just perfect, and flawless. The AC upgrades kept me 100% comfortable in 107 degree temps. The car has well over quadrupled in value, I have as much fun as can be imagined.

It was 105 in Roswell when I stopped to have dinner. What other car on the planet from the mid 1980s can be driven to 41 states, and Canada, and simple work like a modern car, and go up in value so much. It is not for sale for any reasonable price.

No where I can see. The video blew past the whole early long hood heritage using one narrow body SWB car. Didn't even pause for the mid year cars.

I loved that video. well made I think.

I remember as a school boy when the impact bumper 911s came out in 1974. I nearly cried (LOL)

I guess I was bursting into tears all over again when the 996 came out.

Ian,
He's not a bad actor, at least he looked over his shoulder while starting to see how much smoke he'd blow out that morning, that's accurate.
It was a good day for the blue car, no smoke at all.

By the way the red carrera has a lot going for it, I'd hop on in for sure.

Phil
