1996 varioram ECU Reprogram?? any progress made?

anyone know if people like specialized ECU repair and others have made progress in reliably reprograming the 1996 ECU?

I am nearing the time to install an 1996 varioram into my IROC clone. I'd like to add RS or maybe SS cams which will involve a re-tune.

If a no go on the 1996 ECU, are there any good options are available other than finding a rare 1997 ECU?

The '96 993 Motronic is based on a 1 yr only 2 chip design, they are not flashable to tto the component design.

'96US OBD2 - non flashable chips

'97 US OBD2 w/ flashable chips

'95 US and all RoW OBD1 - user replaceable chip

Bill,

Thinking of having instant G convert my harness to 55 pin and providing an igniter,~$1750.00 using a 1995 brain that I can pickup for around ~$1500.00 +/- Having a tune by Wong or Timmons supplied and going with 993 SS cams and changing lifters.

I haven’t shopped going motec yet but I suppose that’s an option too that I should look at.

Any thoughts?

This is on a 1981 IROC clone with a G50/01 gearbox.

Sound reasonable.

JMO but Motec is a better solution, you would need to find someone that can build the Motec conversion harness and tune the motor.

Geoffrey Ring used to be the Motec guy up here, don't know if he's still doing that or not, Last I heard he was into aero engines

I used FVD back in 2012 for my ‘96VRam brain. The 3.6 went in my ‘80SC. No issues and still pulls like a freight train!

Kevin Dawe is our motec/tuning/custom harness guy. Peter Dawe’s son.

To answer any questions, I would contact them directly. I've used them on my past cars and current car 97 VR, which previous owner used. I believe some tuning shops use them. I've had good experiences with them.
