Which Carrera 3.2 has 6,600 redline?

I was chatting with a 3.2 owner yesterday - standard body, not supersport, and with a whale tail - I asked why his rev counter redline started at 6,600 not 6,400. He knew nothing about it, except he'd had the car fron almost new, so he was certain the rev counter had never been changed and it was as it came from the factory.

It was G50, and what he did say was, it was one of the very last ones produced - maybe this accounted for the higher redline? Can anybody account for this? I wondered if it was possibly a factory uprated engine or maybe a clubsport (I noticed no other graphics) as I heard those have uprated internals?

An '88 Club Sport M637 is rated @245hp@5900rpm compared to a normal 3.2 Carreras 231@5900, The M637 has hollow intake valves, remapped Motronic, stiffer motor mounts and lighter starter motor but is otherwise the same as the other local market models, The power increase comes from the remap not revs, cams or valves.

turbo does have a 7K+200/-100 revlimit compared to n/a 6520+/50 but the peak hp is @400rpm less

Peak HP on a factory turbo happens much lower than that; factory quoted 300HP at 5500 RPM for the 1978 930/60 RoW, and the spec - restrictive exhaust, headers, intercooler, tiny intake ports, soft cams, low compression, inefficient turbo and all - stayed the same for years. Although it lost ~35HP to emission control devices/jiggery-pokery in US trim.

Even the "usual suspects" bolt-on upgrades to add 100-150HP don't move peak power over 6K; Ultimate 930 Dyno Thread!

If you say so, I just post what the factory says

That graph certainly looks to peak right at 5500 RPM, the engine speed the factory quote max HP at for both the 3.0 and 3.3 turbos, in both the FSM and (for the 930/60) - what looks to be the same bulletin page the posted graph came from:

(entirely as expected; SC cams move the power band up a fraction - but still peak where they do on an SC - between 5500 (1978 SC) or 5900 RPM (1981 SC). You need more radical cams than that - and a laundry list of complementary mods - to get HP peak over 6K).

The FSM also quotes "max permissible speed" (don't rely on the rev limiter if you still have the string cheese rod bolts) and "max constant speed":

. . .
The final 28 pin chip #1267355358 is identical to the #1267355330 Clubsport ROM except for the redline. The Carrera chip has a 6540 RPM redline as compared to the Clubsport's 6840 redline.

Steve Wong went in depth in this post:
