1986 911

Hi. I am new to this forum. I was wondering if anyone recommend a good shop or person to replace the clutch on 1986 911 cabriolet.
I live in San Francisco Bay area.

Welcome to the forum.

No idea about SF mechanics, but that service may be an ideal opportunity for other service, like sealing oil leaks, or other engine-out maintenance.

I had my 86 Carrera's trans refreshed and clutch replaced at Hi-Tec Automotive in San Rafael with great results.

The Stable in SF as well, although I have not used their services.

Aldo's Performance Motors. They're on Post Street. Have never used them but word is it's a good shop. I think they specialize in Porsche which in my book is a positive.

If in the East Bay, PorBoys in Pacheco, Duetsche MotorSports in Concord, or Pacific MotorSports in Walnut Creek would all be great places to take your Carrera.

As others have pointed out, dropping the engine/tranny to replace the clutch would be a great time to have the mechanic check to see what else should be done “while we’re in there” - most of the labor is already done.

Real Mean Garage (RMG) in Mountain view. They seem to mostly just do 3.2s these days.

Lots of shops. Depends how far you want to drive. You should narrow your location to San Francisco, South Bay, East Bay or the Peninsula. (Craigslist says North Bay is part SFBayArea so throw that in there.) I am South Bay and my go-to shops are RMG in Sunnyvale or BTM in either Campbell or Morgan Hill.

This!

There are several "While you are in there" projects that should be done if you don't know the full service history of the car.

All the "triangle of death" should be checked carefully for leaks. Any sign of leaks, replace them all.

The engine fuel should be replaced if they are the originals. Just spend the money no for new fuel lines while the engine is out.

If the flywheel sensors are not mentioned in and service papers, replace them and the head temp sensor.

And as far as the clutch, depending on total miles, think of a new Omega spring, throw out arm, and replace the pilot bearing, pressure plate and obviously the clutch disk, and throw out bearing.

New plugs and a valve adjustment is wise if they have not been done recently.
