Ultimate PPI/inspection tool!!
I bought this a while ago at Princess Auto ( in canada) I think a lot like your Harbor Freight. cost $200. I think it's called a boroscope? everybody's seen them, it's got a long tube with a light and lense on one end and a eyepiece on the other end. the tube is about 10mm diameter. you can look in holes and things to see what's going on inside.
anyway, I bought a '73 T with a bit of an unknown for an engine. with this I was able to read the cam numbers off the side of the cams, still in the carriers. the coolest thing was I could read the piston number on the bottom of the piston by going thru the sump plate hole with the tool. I think I've seen ones on ebay that can look backwards as well. then you could look at the piston top and the valves thru the spark plug hole. pretty cool. would pay for itself with one PPI of an engine. ![]() ![]() |

Don,
That's a great idea. You can verify what you've got and then if you have good leakdown, etc. there is no need to strip it down a good engine just to find out what's in there. regards, al

Its called a borescope. Used extensively in the aircraft/aerospace industry for trouble shooting purposes, and the examination of say, braze flow inside heat transfer units. Its a great little tool, with all kinds of applications imaginable.

Attach a video camera to it and post up a vid.
I've wanted one of these for quite a while, only smaller...for smaller spaces. And easily bendable...to look at things like valves....

I used one, believe it was Rigid brand, called the See-Snake. You could get additional sections of tube up to about 12ft. It was about $300 and had a screen on it.
I used it to fish wires through walls, worked brilliantly.
