HELP ! ...question on 3.6 liter plugs and ignition

Hi everyone ..

have a couple of questions on a 1990 3.6 liter motor ..

what spark plug numbers and gap specs ?

also can you unplug either one of the harness's from the 2 ignition modules , and keep the motor running ?

I unplug one side , and the motor still runs , then i put that one back on and then i unplug the other one and the motor dies ??? .. i thought that they were 2 seperate systems ??

Please advise .. thanks in advance !

Joe

It sounds like your distributor belt is broken. I wouldn't advise doing it again but when you disconnected the distributor, did it die when you disconnected the distributor closest to the fan? The 2nd distributor (furthest from the fan) is driven by a belt off the 1st distributor.

Good tip Chris,

I forgot which one dies , but i think its the one fartest from the fan that kills the engine .. I'll swap distributor main hi-volt leads from the known good one to the other dist and see what happens, and pull the cap and see if belt is intact..car does have belt vent kit in it ..but who knows

The symptoms are ...

Car was running great up to yesturday , now the car runs and starts fine , but only under HEAVY acceleration i get a strong miss , sort of like a fuel pump cut off on a 930 turbo , if i let off the gas and just cruise or acelerate lightly to moderatly , it runs great ?????

any body else have a input to possible solution ???

Thanks Chris , and everyone !

It's dangerous to run it at all with a broken belt, depending on what position it's resting in.

Sure sounds like a broken belt. Dick at Precision Imports can replace the belt. Not that you couldn't do it yourself but he has the experience and the belts on hand...
(Precision has moved, they are behind UHaul now.)

POVI, you can check www.p-car.com and look in the DIY section for some giudence. As a note: When mine broke I found that the slave rotor shaft had a bad bearing(very notchy and hard to rotate). I had Steve Wiener(Rennsport.com) rebiuld mine for @ $150US. He did a very nice job including replacing the bad bearing, drilling the vent holes and new belt. I just pulled the dizzy myself and sent it to him, it was back in less than a week as I recall

The PET shows an "FR6LDC" plug being used. Have fun getting to the lower ones. Precision is behind UHaul on South Willow. PM me if you need to borrow a distributor.

My reference shows Bosch FR5DTC with a gap of 0.7 mm or 0.028 inches. Just how does one gap a multi-electrode plug anyway? I've (probably wrongly) just assumed they were gaped right of the box?

Update ...

OK , i totally disassembled the distributor, and found that the clip that holds the distributor electrical connector on to the distributor housing .. somehow got loose and must have been bouncing around inside the distributor housing for some time, untill it came between the belt and one of the gears ....and thats what broke the distributor belt !

So I should have the dist. back together tommorrow and back on the road again !

Thanks again everyone
