Latest and greatest CIS conversions
I've looked at many, probably too many, options for getting rid of the CIS on my 1980 911. Which one is best? Tough question. I have no idea. I'd like to upgrade the ignition too but not all systems do that. What I've learned so far:
1 - DIY with Megasquirt. There's ton of options with Megasquirt - maybe too many? https://www.diyautotune.com/shop/megasquirt-kits-components/ I do like the idea of just doing the fuel side first and then tackling the ignition. I'll need some kind of throttle bodies. There seems to be lots of options there. 2 - Bitz. It's all done for you on the fuel side with no option for ignition. I'm not nuts about the look with the old CIS intakes. https://bitzracing.com/ 3 - Clewett - These guys seem to be the go to guys that other vendors use for some of their parts. They've been around a long time. https://www.clewett.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_74&products_id=496 4 - X Factory - Seems well engineered. (He uses the abbreviation, RHD in his description. To me that means, Right Hand Drive. No idea what it means here.) https://www.x-faktory.com/store/p3/X-faktory_EFI_systems.html I've got an old 6 cylinder Jag with dual Strombergs. It runs great but what I learn on the 911 I'd like to be able to transfer to the Jag. The systems described above use Megasquirt, Haltech and Link controllers so which ever one I choose for the 911, I'd like to use the same controller on the Jag. Right now, I'm learning toward Clewett or X Factory because they offer complete solutions. Other options?

Hi,
For #4, RHD is the brand name of the ITBs. I do agree it is easy to confuse with drivers side! Keep in mind there really isn’t any turn key replacement for DIY CIS. X- faktory has great complete kits. The mechanical side is turn key, tuning it is a different story. Every system I’m aware of requires tuning by the end user or a shop. It can be a very steep frustrating learning curve. Best, Rutager

I'm looking forward to the tuning aspect of it. I'd like to use the same controller for both cars. Dave

ICARP the CIS..simple, easy ,cheap. You can hot rod the engine all you want because the CIS is adjustable now.

Why do you want to get rid of the CIS?
If it’s for looks, or because you want to play with it, go nuts! If it’s for speed or something else, I’d think about leaving the CIS, particularly if part of what you like about your 911 is that you can get in and drive it any place any time. It’s a long road to that outcome with megasquirt. I did RHD ITBs and while I’m pretty happy with how it’s come out, man, it is ENDLESS fiddling to get it to run like a normal car. My airbox was grenaded, and I had done some other modifications to the engine that meant I could likely squeeze a bit more out of it with efi, and I like to fiddle, so it lined up for me. However, if my airbox weren’t toast, I’d probably not have chosen this path. For instance, controlling for altitude changes, that’s something CIS takes care of on its own. For me, it’s meant a major overhaul of my tune, and hardware changes, just to drive up a hill! Now consider that for every possible environmental change (well, not quite but almost). Couple that with losing availability of off the shelf parts access, and normal shop tech help, and you’re more or less out to sea solo if you do this. It’s worth reading user jpnovak’s post about efi tuning, and review the megasquirt user manual for an idea of what you are signing up for. Either way, good luck!

I did 2 and you can do ignition, with an upgrade to the MS. I kept the CIS look. For those asking, I changed because my air box was cracked my wur was wrong and a few other things were out of whack. I would have been the same $ to keep CIS and my LT goal is to swap to ITB's so Bitz was a great starting point
