915 1/2 Slider
Ugh. Not sure about the new slider for my ‘81 915. I received a box of goodies from Pelican this week and one of those parts is a 1/2 slider. While inspecting, it just looks different. I doesn’t have a fully ground synchro engagement surface. The second gear side of the slider has a “machined” surface. To me, it looks like a grind, or more, was missed on the slider. Does this look right?

Take another pix in the same position but flip the new sleeve for observation of symmetry.

The new slider is on the left in all pics, but flipped in some.

The recess in the center looks ok and give the detent feeling of engagement. The rest of it including the flats on the side not so good. Aftermarket parts can be hit and miss.

This was the “Porsche” version. I went ahead and received a RMA from pelican and will ship it back tomorrow. A replacement is on the way. Fingers crossed that the second one is good.
Thanks for looking at this!

if i am not mistaken the one on top pic left is not for 1 and 2 gears. The 1st gear side has different angle on the original slider as are the doot teeth on the 1st gear..

Looks like you bought the symmetric 1-2 slider but it appears you have an asymmetric 1st gear dog teeth, so you need the asymmetric 1-2 slider, which is a different part number. 930-302-411-02
Unless you changed your first gear dog teeth back to symmetrical for some reason. https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/198932-915-1st-gear-asymmetrical-hub-update-kit.html |

I bought this first gear dog tooth:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/101550312.htm?pn=10-1550-312-M157 And I bought this slider: https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/more_info.cgi?pn=930-302-411-03-OEM This slider is asymmetric as viewed in the images. The asymmetric side is left in the first set of pictures above and then pointed right in the second set of images. It's tough to see, but the teeth geometry seems ok, but the synchro surface just seems wrong. This part number has images, 930-302-411-02, so you can see the asymmetric profile. The part number I bought, 930-302-411-03-OEM, doesn't have any images to reference. I checked a few other sites and their images show the asymmetric tooth geometry for this part number. IDK...

You have the correct parts, maybe the next one will be better.

My bad. And thanks for the help. I just don't have any experience with gearboxes and this just didn't seem "right" so the best thing to do is ask folks that know.

Whenever you get that little voice in the back of your head saying, "something isn't right," listen to it. Most of the time it's right. Kudos to you for listening.

I received the new slider. It's the same as the first one. I plan to call Pelican to discuss, but I just can't imagine that this surface is correct. The surface that would mate with the 2nd gear synchro is completely flat. The surface that would mate with the 1st gear synchro is ground with curvature, but has a flat spot, as well. Any thoughts from the experts.

I believe you can run that sleeve with confidence, it’s in Porsche packaging. Things are just different, or made differently than in the past. You could try WTB a NOS sleeve, they’ve been in production for 40 yrs, someone’s got to have one stashed away somewhere.

Have you tried reaching out to any of the 915 parts suppliers like CMS or Matt Monson? They may have some insight.
