Door roll pin removal - arrgggghh

Door roll pin removal - arrgggghh
How the hell do you get these things out.

What seemed like a simple job is not!

It is the roll pin type. I guess where it’s worn it’s catching and won’t push through. Making a right mess but best stop before I slip with the pin punch again!

Did it have a head on it or just a straight pin? I used a punch with a really long extension then a mallet to hammer them out. Had a buddy hold the punch and extension while i hammered. Fortunately for me i had the old pin style on there and was able to punch it out from the top. The replacement one i installed has a head, so in the future it would need to get punched from the bottom up.

Yeah take a break and come back to it. Try to get someone to hold the punch (a diameter that can make it through the hole) and an extension of some sort. I tried it without and the angle i was hitting wasn’t working. The a pillar kept getting in my way and didn’t want to damage it. The extension got me above the door cards and gave me all the room to give it a good hit. You need to get some good straight down whacks with the mallet to get it through.

Perhaps a socket and a C clamp with a bolt that fits the hole?

Socket and a pair of these "vise" like Knipex pliers has worked well for me for removal and install. Not cheap, but you will find all kinds of uses for them.

I’ve got some of those. How do you remove them with those flat
Jaws and a socket?

I understand what you are suggesting but it might require more hands than can fit into the space.
A motorcycle chain breaker might allow him to do it a bit easier.

There are several kits that try to be universal. Amz has several styles to look at.

Haven't done it before - but what about a G clamp?
Socket on the bottom - to clear the pin but support the clamp and a punch type thing on top - slips inside the pin then pushes down on the outer part of it. Then squeeze with the clamp - save on bashing the pillar fixture. I have a lathe. I would turn up a fitting to push in the pin in 5 min, but you may come up with an alternative aleady made somewhere. Even if you have to butcher a punch. Better than the alternatives of damaging something.

I used a punch and a hammer to get mine out (IIRC) you can duct tape the area to protect it some (used a few layers).

Once mine were out I replaced them with bolts and lock nuts. Lock nut on the bottom. Just tighten the nuts until the door quits making noise from where the pin was. much easier install and removal if needed. Not my idea, got the idea from John Walker (the workshop dude). I replaced the pins with bolts because my new pins kept working their way out (not your problem, at least yet).

Proper diameter roll pin punch and a hammer on an 83 SC recently. No issues. Reading the OP's post my first thought was that he was using too large of a diameter punch. Looks like that in the pics.

A little oil won’t hurt, but the weight of the door in its open position might be binding the pin, suggest lifting the door up and supporting it with a trolley jack or some stacked lumber a little to relieve any pressure, and/or if there’s room, close the door somewhat so it’s not hanging causing pressure on the stop hinge.
Try tapping it out from the bottom upward too. With the proper punch maybe a small dead weight hammer so won’t travel as much and drift off the punch.

Another option being that there is enough sticking out on the other side. Get some good vice grips, clamp the roll pin on the bottom tightly, hammer on the vice grips to finish pulling it out.
