tech help with statrter

Helped a fellow PCA'r replace the starter with a rebuilt one from
local p-car dealer. He had prviously replaced the ignition switch.
Cleaned all the grounds and straps. he made it home fine and it startted great for a week or so. Now he can't get it to start. When he turns the key he can hear the solinoid humm, but no
start. He wants to replace the yellow wire from the ignition switch to the starter, but first I want to check if there is a Voltage drop from the battery back. Any further thoughts from one of you guys that own an79 sc.

can the starter sol. be jumped when it fails to start with the key?

Assuming the solenoid humming is not accompanied by a loud click of the solenoid trying to make contact, does the "moderate" tap of a ball-peen hammer on the side of the solenoid free it up?

This recently happened to me & the hammer was my friend in a time of need ;^)

I would consider just jumping the solenoid directly off the big wire that is attached to the started, it is a heavy gauge wire that runs fro the battery directly to the started, so there should be lots of juice there. Just disconnect the yellow wire and jump that from the big one. If the starter fires ( you don't even need the key in the car for this, actually better if it is not in) then the started is fine, hoever if not, you have a bad starter.

This is a stupid question, but have you tried jump starting the car using a car with a battery that is known to be good? Perhaps the battery was just putting out enough current to start the car when the contacts were cleaned but know has degraded to the point where nothing will help it power the starter.

Neil's bang on, next check the wire from the battery to the starter for corrosion, etc. Probably not enough voltage getting to the starter.
