I know..another tire question. Toyo R888r
I know it’s been covered before and I’ve searched thoroughly and I don’t see any recent recommendations on the Toyo R888R.
My car is a fair weather driver in the mountains of North Georgia and I’m rarely out in any rain. Looking to replace Bridgestone RE71s and want a great gripping tire for fun. I have read the older R888’s were loud but the newer tires were a little quieter but looking for perspective from real world use on a g body 911. Any help from experience?

245 and 205. 7and 9” Fuchs. My main consideration is a fun tire with good grip. Tire life is not a concern but love the price of these. My RE’s were great tires but getting a little hard from age. I’d like to keep the set under 1k and want the best sticky tire. Again, my driving is “spirited” on very curvy mountain roads…the kind of roads that everyone from 200 miles around flock to on the weekends with sport bikes and sports cars…love where I live.

I think they're loud. On a highway, it's like driving a pick-up with lugged mud tires. OK, not that bad, but it's reminiscent of that. It's slightly annoying. If I had to drive with my wife in the car frequently, I'm not sure I (she) would like it. But the kids seem to think it adds to the character of the car.
I'm happy with the canyon carving grip.

I've had them on my car for a while. Pro: very sticky for acceleration and cornering. Con: wear very quickly and get louder and louder and louder as they wear.
FWIW: I've run two sets of 888Rs. Not sure I'll go a third. Oh, and they're absolutely terrible in wet conditions. Drive in the rain/thundershower at your peril. :-) |

I really like R888Rs but I use them for track days and not so much public roads. I consider it my morning tire until both I (mentally) and the track get up to temperature before switching to Hoosiers. Yes, they are also my rain tire and I find them very predictable (in/out of the wet). Windows are down and running headers so I cannot comment on road noise.

The Firehawk Indy 500 is essentially the old Re003 if you ever liked that tire.

I saw the Potenza Sport and may just go that route is I don’t use the Advan A052. I don’t mind a loud tire, but I certainly would prefer not to have one. I’ve had them on the car before( hankooks) in the past, and they wore on my nerves after a while.

Check out the Toyo R1R. They are my current HPDE, Autocross, drivin' around tire.
I no longer need to put on my Hoosiers for Autocross and use Continental ExtremeContact Sports for everything else.

I have been waiting to buy a set of R1R for months in 205/15/50, but they have been backordered for months now. I have a feeling they have discontinued them. Good tires that have been around for a while now, a tad loud, and one of the widest, tread wise, out of any manufacturer.

I, too, live in North GA, so far north that I can see Chattanooga Tennessee from my living room. My car is a 1979 early Euro Gray Market SC Targa. It is a low option (crank up windows) car that I have driven for 6 years on 888Rs. The car is light weight and has a stock, but strong 3.2 out of a 1987. I have been running a square setup with 225/50 15 front and rear on 7 and 8 inch Fuchs. They grip well, work in the rain at reasonable speeds when caught out in one of our late afternoon showers , are surprisingly quiet on smoother surfaces, ride fairly comfortably and are very round, so balancing is not an issue. With the 3.2 engine can you believe it, but the rear tires are wearing out. I, too, am looking for tires, but I am disgusted with the poor selection in 15 inch rubber. I am about to order the 888s again. It sucks to leave the Targa home on a clear, but cold day. That's looking like a small price to pay. Good luck, man.

I am considering Toyo R888R for my original-paint 3.2. I was warned that they might pick up stones significantly and „sandblast“ the wheel house and paint around it. What are your experiences with this? Have you had any issues? Thanks and best, Dennis

Yup sticky tires pick a lot of junk from the road.

I’ve run quite a few sets of R888R in 225/45 and 245/45 over the past 50–60k miles. Rear life varied anywhere from \~3k to 7k miles depending on use (road trips, track days, etc.), while the fronts typically lasted about twice as long.
They can get noisy, but nothing unbearable. Wet performance isn’t terrible, though it depends a lot on how much camber you’re running. These tires really prefer plenty of camber and lower pressures—they’re awful at stock PSI. I usually run them at 22–27 psi cold with -1.7/-2.7 camber although limited by front strut mounts. ![]()
