G50 Cross-shaft Update
Anyone have a picture of the original cross-shaft. I believe I have the updated cross-shaft, but I can't find confirming data. The Bentley manual indicates that the the update is a set of new needle bearings and the updated cross shaft. I believe I have what is pictured in the Bentley manual, but from their description the shaft may look similar except the shaft is sized to work with the updated needle bearings.
For comparison, here is a picture of the other(non-factory) update which does not require boring out the bearing bore. Looks like bearing-bushings to replace the old bearings. ![]() Last edited by MotoSook; 04-20-2005 at 10:30 AM.. |

When I removed my original setup, it was needle bearings. They were still moving but were very dry and wearing grooves onto the shaft. I used the one above with high temp silicone grease as a lube. It is still working very well. I hope all this useless info is of some help.

That's useful "toolman." The problem I have is differentiating the factory "updated" shaft install with the "original" install. Both appear to use needle bearings, but the update appears to use bigger/better bearing. Or have I read the wrong information.
There is a tech bulletin on the update process, but I haven't found it. If I did I don't know if it would tell me ho to distinguise between the two. ![]() |

This is the updated arm and Pivot Shaft - note that the updated arm uses plastic bushings that ride on the shaft, although the shaft is installed in the trans bellhousing with needle bearings.
![]() BTW, the bolt shown above is the "install tool". Chris Last edited by CBRacerX; 04-20-2005 at 05:29 PM.. |

I have that release fork, and the shaft looks a lot like that. Then I started reading stuff..err. .. the update precess leads me to the conclusion that the update addresses the needle bearings...and maybe the shaft diameter and release fork bore.
What is the shaft OD..and is it different? Anyone have the old cross-shaft and release fork..picture? |

Tech Bull 4, 3 pages
I'll send it as scanned and narrowed to fit whole screen on OE ? ps: it's needle bearings and has to be drilled. although it says "were changed from needle bearings to friction bearings" but on the parts diag it says "needle bearings[closed]"

Souk,
Here are pics of the original. Note the grooves from the needle bearings. ![]() ![]() I started with the upgrade kit you showed above. I returned it and bought the same one as Chris. Installation was much easier. No special machining tool needed. Pelican should try and offer this kit. Good luck...

Thanks guys! Looks like I have the update, but now I have to clean or replace the needle bearigns that are in there. It's a bit crudded up with clutch material dust.
THANKS! |

Replace is the way to go, they can be hard to get out without damaging them - but you might get lucky!

I was just at Dave White Racing - he was talking about this - said even with the update - the better upgrade is to use the larger diameter (which from the looks of yours is what you have) - but change the needle bearings with polybronze bushings...

It doesn't look like the update can be reversed Jeremy. That is, once the new bearings have been installed, the bronze bushings upgrade is not possible. Correct?

I didn't go into that much detail with him - it wasn't my tranny - It was an 88 of a fellow pelicanite that I was hand holding. I was worried that the update hadn't been done - and Dave was bragging about on the g-50 and how he takes it one step further on the g-50 fork update.
Said he didn't like the needle bearings that the factory uses because they wear - prefers the poly bronze bushings and that all the race cars that he uses he doesn't put anything else in. Yada Yada Yada... On Jason's the plastic bushings were cracked - so it made sense to me...

What a crappy state of things...an update from the factory...I agree. The more I dig the more worn parts I see. Might as well replace it all. I might have to order the bronze bushing update and see if I can't install it, in place of the now updated parts
![]() Anyone out there done that? Might have to call John Walker. Last edited by MotoSook; 04-21-2005 at 06:20 AM.. |

You CANNOT do the bronze update once the "Factory" update has been done, the bellhousing is machined too large.
Ask me how I know ![]()

That's what I was afraid of. I think I'll just add an oversized bronze bushing to my list of things to make...motomotions style!
Thanks for all the help guys. Ronnie, please send the tech bull anyway. I'd like to see the whole story. Thanks! |

Hey Souk - where do you get the poly bronze update? I like the idea of not boring out the tranny anymore
