Another footwell blower help request
Need some help troubleshooting the footwell blowers on a 1984 Targa, manual heat 4 position knob.
Driving the other day and everything works fine, stopped car for a while, then coming home the footwell blowers would not work. Engine blower works fine when red levers lifted Checked for power at footwell with meter, No power at footwell connection Footwell blowers work with a 12V source applied There are no fuses on the footwell blowers (they will be added once I get them working) No footwell blower running at any setting, 0, 1, 2, 3 Tried with key turned in ignition both engine off and engine running Checked fuses in engine compartment , all look ok. Pulled controller in engine compartment and cleaned off contract pins and put back in. Still no footwell blowers So what can I check next? Where can I check for the source of power to the foot well blowers? |

![]() This large box behind the plastic cover in the engine compartment is a possible culprit. ![]() Pull the relay, and look at the socket and connections. Mine were corroded, but no the ultimate cure. ![]() Carefully open the box, and watch to see if the smaller relay closes. ![]() If is closes like this you should have the footwell blowers running. Use a plastic tool to manually close it, and if the fans start, you big relay is likely not working. The bad news is those are no longer available new. The used market is the only source.

Well that did not go well.
I pulled this relay box earlier today to clean out the contacts. I put it back in. A few hours latter I went to pull it out again. Do not pull the box up, pry that connector off from the bottom. What a PIA to get those pins back in place. Had to unbolt the metal bracket just to get the wire loose enough to maneuver the pins in place. Only good news is that those wires did not move and there really isnt any way to get the pins in the wrong place. I don't want to do that again. I think I did enough today. ![]() |

When I said pull the relay, it was just a way of saying carefully remove the relay, like pull the engine. I use a plastic or nylon trim removal tool. Sorry for the confusion.
Use the same tool to manually close the small relay and if the fans run, you will either need a new relay, or do what some have done: ![]() ![]()

Lol, not your fault. I had removed it earlier that day and just figured it would come off easy if I pulled it from the top. Opps

Well I went though all the 12 pin tests on the connector and everything worked fine.
Power from pin 3 to 4 and the footwell fans spun right up. I pulled control box apart. Tested the small relay with a 12Volt battery , no movement. I checked the coil with the ohm meter and there was no continuity, open circuit. There is no outward sign of damage to the small coil. Somewhere in that coil that tiny wire has busted. So I guess its time to figure out a fix. |
