1976 911S Targa
|
Singer Build vs Original
Well, This evening I had my first encounter with a Singer restomod. My original 76 Targa 911S was parked at the winery in Woodinville, Wa. Accross the way was a Singer. I looked at the engine: 4.0 litre of power. The exterior and interior were works of art. The seats were protected by inexpensive seat covers. The owner said the car was going up for auction on Monday. I protested: "No, drive the car. Enjoy it." My conclusion: each to his own. We all own these cars for different reasons. On the way home, I enjoyed giving my Porsche a bit of gas and zipping by the Subarus, Hondas, and Priuses (are they a real car?).
My two cents. Michael |

I know what you mean. Sure I'd love a Singer but it would be, umm, less than pristine in no time around my place. So the dogs and I tend to really use our stuff and not save it for the next guy.

If money wasn’t a factor everyone on this forum would want a Singer 911, but for normal people who work hard for their $$, we can achieve a good enough result for a fraction of what a Singer costs. Sure it’s not as nice, but it’s good enough to have fun and affordable enough to not worry about devaluing it. I love my ‘reimagined’ 911!

I wouldn’t want one if I had the choice of any $500-750k car. Too generic. They are very nice but all pretty much the same other than color and interior “styling”. Reminds me of rows of McMansions. Pretty to look at, lots of details, lots of wow factor when you walk in but doesn’t feel like a home. Do the singer owners really like their cars or do they like the idea that they were sold on.

I am looking forward to my friend receiving his Singer. I have been fortunate that he has shared photos and details along the way of the build. It's going to be fantastic. I know he will drive his as he drives the heck out of his P1 , Ferrari F40, both generations of Ford GT, his Carrera GT, his 993 Turbo S and his other expensive cars. He is a rare guy who drive all of his car no matter the weather.

Thing is you do not need to spend that kind of money to make a fun car even more fun.
Cruise through some of the threads here to see some of the best out there IMO it's more about bang for the buck for you vision of the car, each s different but also special in their own way

If I had Singer money, I’d buy a 993 GT2 or an SC-RS or a 959 or a, I could go on… they are nice cars. But there are a ton of factory cars I’d rather get seat time in.

I’d be more interested in an all steel car. I certainly appreciate their interiors and engine though.

Re Singers and not driving them: I'll say what I say over on the Ford GT Forum about the guys there that don't drive their cars, "That's like marrying a supermodel and saving her for the next guy. Not me. I'm gonna wear her ass out, make babies, and grow old together!"
I have 85,000 miles on my Ford GT.

I am nearing 196,000 miles on my 85 911. I just returned from Birmingham, AL. I got to drive on the Talladega Superspeedway. At 100 I still had to steer up the banking to stay on the 33 degree banking. At 110 to 120 it was very neutral. I did get to 125 for a while. It was the first time I got to triple digits with no comments from my wife to slow down.
Then I spent all day Saturday on Barber Motorsports track going as fast as I could in my antique. I was the only air cooled car there in a field of over 160 cars. Any modern Porsche is tons faster with double the HP and more. I still had just as much fun, and then drove it home. Yea Singer is a work oof art, but for less money a new 911 Turbo S will do everything better. For Singer money, I would go for a RUF. I know Singer will not miss my business as they have a long waiting list. Power to them, they do it right.

Singers are cool, but I think the price explosion (an easy $1M+ depending on options!) and sheer number of them that are seemingly being produced takes some of the "special" out of it. OTOH, you're probably (mostly) getting a car on a timeframe that doesn't slip by years.
Given a (fraction) of the cost of a Singer (say, $150-250k) you could build something really special — and that truly speaks to your own tastes — even by outsourcing all of it, provided you trust your shops. Esp. if you don't want/need the 4.0 motor.

I'm doing the work, myself, on one currently and I would say that if your sourcing most of the work out and your turning a G body into a long hood it's more like $300,000 to $400,000
