Fuel Pump Leaking?
I have a 1974 911 targa 2.7 litre. I started her up yesterday and notice a slow fuel drip under the engine compartment. I put the car on jacks and crawled around, but couldn't see any visible leaks in any of the lines in or out of the pump. The drip seams to be coming from the pump itself, but it's hidden in the housing driver's side rear.
Is it possible for the pump to develop a leak? as far as I know this is the original fuel pump.

I pulled out the fuel pump and it's definitely the pump leaking, not the fuel lines. I would order a new one from our host, but there's no image, and I have a feeling modifications may be required.
This is what my fuel pump looks like: ![]() I think this is what I would be ordering: ![]() Can anyone confirm myself suspicions, or tell me where I can get a fuel pump that will fit right in? Thanks

yes you have original pump. It can be rebuilt, Peter George does a fine job. PKgeorge on this forum
The challenge with the new pumps : requires modification to your wiring harness or you need to make adapter wires and you also need to modify your fuel lines. Last edited by speedster911; 11-21-2020 at 04:24 PM.. |

My 87 has a similar pump as your 2nd image. I can tell you my original was leaking internally. I started smelling fuel and after another drive I noticed a significant amount of fuel smell in my garage. After pulling my belly pan I could see fuel dripping out of one of the electrical connections. So yes it’s possible to be leaking internally and out somewhere other than a hose connection. If in doubt find a replacement or do what I should have done and attempted to have my original repaired. I had to do a lot of searching to find an older part # pump that didn’t require connection changes.

If worse comes to worst, and exact replacements are NLA, now would be a good time to update the pump's location to the front of the car. That way the plumbing you do there - which might be minimal - will be especially worth while, because you will have located the pump where it belongs, away from the heat of the engine and transmission, including the air blown through the heat exchangers but - in summer - exiting the driver's side flapper valve pretty close to the pump.

this is the wrong pump for your car.... I have a 74 Targa and had the same issue. Fuel pump leaking. I am let to believe that you can make the 'in-line' tyoe working, but we ended up fitting the correct one. But it is (way) more expensive ... YMMV
Happy with the proper fix/replacement.

The correct pump is not NLA as I recently did one for a customer concerned with originality. Never mind that the correct fuel tank (also replaced) IS NLA so a forward mounted pump is what I try and recommend in these cases.
This pump looks like it’s been kludged when last installed, wrong clamps leading to fire. I bet the fuel hose is low pressure Pep Boys garbage as well.

![]() ![]() The pump in Post #2 is definitely what you should be ordering. This Flow-Through design is far better than the original side outlet pump you have now. This newer design is used by many auto manufacturers worldwide, and as such, the prices have dropped dramatically. Today you can buy a BOSCH 69459 Flow-Through pump (as above) from a popular source for around $100. It will require a custom hose like this.... ![]() OR, if you want info on relocating the Pump up front, I am happy to help. Please email me...... Larry, PP member Wolffie911 is selling a rebuilt pump that looks like a 74 pump; today on used parts forum $275. Though everybody likes moving the pump to the front. Good luck, John.

Moving the pump to the front is a good idea. With the fuels of today it eliminates the possibility of vapor lock with the rear mounted pump. Pushing the gas to the engine is better than sucking it to the engine.

How to remove gas smell?
I removed the gas pump, very easy, but if I decide to ship it out for a rebuild...how do I get the smell out of it? I was considering pumping some dish soap and water through it.
Thoughts?

no water, If you have some rubber caps for the ends, if not put painters tape on ends and put in a baggie, wrap with bubble wrap.
If you go with pgeorge, it will come back primed - I think he uses royal purple oil. The pumps he did for me , car started after one or two tries. |
