what NOT to use on rebuilding engine
Well, this becoming common thing here in Bohemia.Once a while i get to do engine which was in the hands of a mechanic with no clue or i`d say wants to be secure of oil leaks.
Cleaning this stuff off is not fun ..never mind all that crap inside the engine. So do not use silicon stuff on these engine ,only recommended adhesives ...and only a little of it. here are some samples i had to deal with and now dealing with another engine now. 1st is 993 2nd that Bohemian Singer i just worked on ..it is coming back for oil leaks and new oil return tubes Notice the cylinder heads and through bolts 3rd too much stuff on chain housing covers... ![]() ![]() ![]() the last pic is the best , if you can find under the silicone the part;-)?? ![]()

Clearly done by people who have a little (dangerous) knowledge and run with it. Wait till they plug an oil orifice with all that excess floating around, then the real trouble begins.

It is actually something i would use on Chevy Monte Carlo back in the USA for valve cover gasket;-)back in the 1980`s...
The grey Dirko can be used but without the paper gaskets Ivan

i always "paint" my paper gaskets with a thin film of loctite 574 and have never had any issues.. But i had a friend show me a dish full of silicon he pulled out of an engine he was rebuilding due to oil starvation.. and we all know why.

574 is magic stuff. After my shift rod gasket started leaking i just pressed out a bit of the leak and it stopped. Great stuff and especially for valve covers.

Oh ya one more thing -not adhesive related .If you work on your engine and drop something inside make sure you get it out not just replace it.Like this engine -that schmuck who did the cam.cover gaskets dropped the gear pin in and just replaced it with new.. and this is what happened.....

i got a little buzy here..but this repair beats them all..what an idiots..and they gave it to the client this car back with major oil leaks and said sorry.....It will be a challenge to fix this--have to take the engine apart ......so, do not never ever use too much force on this through oil bolt for the right camshaft.
Got that sucker out ... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

See kids that’s why you don’t take LSD and work on customers engines. Can’t believe the guy who did that actually has a shop and clients.

Does that Singer have a Cosworth, Ed Pink, or Porsche Motorsport engine?

My 930 was like that when I got it from Japan. Several colours of silicone. AND a timing pin in the crankcase. Luckily no damage. Found it in time.
And the sellers report stated 'freshly rebuilt engine'. It was all downhill from there for the next year. Hard to believe these people are out there. I guess they must offer cheap rates? Alan
