Nick’s new trans problem
Yesterday I went for a great back country ride in my 3.2. Shifted great. This morning, went for a drive and would hardy shift into first and second!! Now as you know we just finished about 8 days in 100 plus weather. Dried up linkage maybe? Clutch adjustment? Not that many miles on adjustment. What do you think.

When is the last time you replaced all your tunnel bushings? Inspect coupler to.

I had a similar issue recently, it turned out to be a cable adjustment. Ian was able to figure it out by that giving an extra hard push on the clutch pedal would result in easy shifting. We ended up tightening the cable adjustment by about 1/2 turn and all is well again.

The coupler is good. I checked it. I like the idea of a half term on the clutch cable. I’m on it tomorrow.

Make sure the clutch pedal comes all the way back up when you release it.

Still here

Have someone verify the clutch cable travel at the tranny before tweaking the cable.
Check the pedal area too. |

I had trouble shifting into 1st. It was sometimes blocked. It was a broken shift rod bushing (it was broken in half). You checked your coupler, but you need to also check your cup and shift rod bushing, which unfortunately requires you to remove your console (I has a shop do this for me). If you check, be sure to just replace these plastic pieces with new.

I cannot adjust the coupler for the life of me! I installed it new 10 years ago but just cannot get all the shifting points right. Could someone please send me steps to set correctly? Either first gear is not right or it’s reverse!!

All of the bushings? Even if the bushings in the coupler itself are good, if the other bushings in the shift linkage are bad it will be difficult to get the linkage adjustment correct. If you have not replaced the shift rod bushing and ball cup bushing, you should probably replace them before attempting to adjust the coupler. The shift rod bushing is #22 in the image below. The ball cup bushing is #23 in the image below. There are many videos on replacing the bushings and adjusting the linkage. This video shows the ball cup bushing, the shift rod bushing and the coupler bushings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ogYPj_LVNU Here is a good video on adjusting the coupler: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xwpwKu2jb8 Check #22 and #23 in the picture below. ![]() Our host sells a kit with all the bushings: https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/PELBUSHKIT1N.htm?pn=PEL-BUSHKIT1N&bc=c&SVSVSI=0581 |
