Porsche Crest WEVO Gateshift

Hi Pelican people,
Ive recently had my 915 fully rebuilt by a well known Porsche specialist here in NZ,
While he was in there, I had him install a WEVO gateshift. Since reinstalling the engine and box into the car, every gear is really nice to select, except 4th, it has all the characteristics if a worn synchro, but that is brand new. When shifting up into 4th it gives the nasty graunch. If i let the revs drop, and pull it into 4th, it’s somewhat smooth. But when shifting down from 5th into 4th it crunches no matter what. Revs up or revs down, its nasty. The gear box has come back out, and gone back to the mechanic for another go. He spent a lot of time ensuring all was operating as it should when on the bench. Have again reinstalled engine and box, and its still crunching into 4th. Ive read a lot about downshifting from 5th to 4th and nicking the reverse gear on the way through, but that doesn’t explain why its problematic going 3rd to 4th.
Has anyone else experienced this and can impart some wisdom ?

Something is wrong, and doubtful gateshift has anything to do with it. If the dog teeth are grinding entering 4th, the box needs to come back apart to investigate.

I have the Waco gate and Classic shifter - both installed by me.

I would ensure your shifter and clutch are precisely adjusted.

When done correctly, it should shift like a bolt action rifle.

Best of luck, Gordo

Thanks Guys,

@Gordo2, by clutch adjustment, do you mean ensure it is fully engageing when I push the pedal?
All other gears feel very "Bolt action" when pushing. I also have the Wevo short shift kit and have spent many hours adjusting to try solve the problem. I will reinstate the factory shifter just to rule that out

Clutch adjustment per spec / Bentley etc. with measured throw & gap at clutch arm. Also ensure all linkage bushings are new or good condition.

I also have the Wevo coupler / joint that is a great item to reduce play.

Finally play with shifter adjustment until you are intimately familiar & satisfied. I drive around with the coupler joint cover off & hex tool for a day or 2, fine tuning (those splines are rather fine & somewhat difficult to move / adjust by a degree or so - but it makes a difference…).

Bottom line if your rebuilder is good, your trans is probably good and something else is out of adjustment or worn (linkage bushings…).

Good luck.
