Why would you remove the Bumperettes?

when they are a perfect place to set your beer, 8mm and 10mm sockets and stare at your engine bay looking for something to do

3rd_gear_Ted 11-10-2024 07:59 AM

They are known as baby buggy bumpers in some circles.

wildthing 11-10-2024 08:00 AM

I really would like to replace them with Euro ones...

schoward 11-10-2024 08:28 AM

I have mine on as I like stock, but the US ones are actually pretty heavy. Some people go for the weight savings out back...maybe 10 lbs for the pair of big chunky US ones (?).

chrismorse 11-10-2024 08:56 AM

thumbs down.....

The big ones are FUGLY, The little euro ones, less so. And yes this is not only rear most weight, but contributes nothing to performance, originality be damned.
Mine are off.
Despite the weight savings, however i will not yield to fiberglass bumpers - there are still way too many miscreants that park by ear and I'm not sure if the insurance company's will pay for the damage if you have ditched the bumpers.

grumble, grump,
chris

Bill Douglas 11-10-2024 10:00 AM

Yes, those US ones are big enough for two beers each side (or 20mm sockets instead of 10mm), whereas a Euro bumperettes are much lighter. I like them - good as a parking aid.

nospiners 11-10-2024 12:17 PM

Just plain ugly , eyesores that look like they don't belong !!

GH85Carrera 11-10-2024 12:49 PM

I was in a parking lot at the Rocky Mountains National park. Some dummy rolled backwards and bumped right into my US version bumperettes as I was in the car setting up the next destination in GPS. It pushed me forward a few feet. I jumped out and looked at the damage, and there was none. There was a dirt mark on the umperette, that wiped right off.

It was a good thing they were on there, or I would be in jail still. ;)

Yep some dopehead passed out and crashed into the back of my car and it was fine. His tow hook directly hit the bumperette. No problem. I dont mind the look of them maybe because its a black car and they blend in better. Good for sitting on when you need to also. I think they look weird without them or even with the euro ones but im probably just use to looking them big ones ;) And with the whale tail they just go together it looks right

Quite simply, because I have a magnetic holder for my beer and for my sockets.

Besides, I prefer bottled beer and the bumperetts are not really good for that.

Hmmmm... I wonder.... custom bumperettes with a dished top surface.....

Bill Douglas 11-10-2024 02:17 PM

Confession time. Someone in a Ford Mondeo intentionally parked me in. There was lots of room behind the Ford and he was against my 911. I said to my friend "not a problem." In reverse, plenty of rev's and it pushed the Ford back, it destroyed his fibreglass bumper and didn't put a mark on the SC :D

porschedude996 11-10-2024 07:10 PM

I was going to go with the euro ones. I bought a set out of Europe and decided to go bare. I was repainting the bumper anyway and welded the holes closed.

I have a set I would sell. PM if interested.

Whenever I see a US spec 911 with these awful, huge bumpers I just think of the song with the words “Fat Bottomed Girls…..”. UScrash regulations ruined the looks of many cars and the 911 is one of them. Fit Euro or delete altogether but keep the bumper shocks.

AG81 11-11-2024 04:36 AM

Why...because they are Fugly.

75 911s 11-11-2024 05:08 AM

Weight and looks for me personally. They are at the tail end of the vehicle and weigh 15.5 pounds.

In terms of keeping them on in case someone rolls into me, yeah maybe. If their bumper is 8" off the ground, otherwise it's going right into my reflector or decklid.

PS I miss the shelf for the beer and 10mm socket though. :-D

15.5# hanging off the back equates to 373.6 lb-ft of torque to change direction

cky3396 11-11-2024 12:04 PM

just for the record I want to say I like the look of the US bumperettes, I like the look of the euro bumperettes, and I like the look of the folks who have removed them altogether for a shaved look.

I think everyones porsche looks awesome

47silver 11-11-2024 12:32 PM

i think that they are cool. They are a substantially made part that after almost 50 years looks new when a bit of glycerin is put on them. Imagine what they would cost new?

fanaudical 11-11-2024 05:11 PM

Well, mine were in very bad shape when I got the car. Ripped, falling apart, and a few studs were gone - so off they came. I JB-Welded the holes before painting. I have thought about putting some Euro bumperettes on their because it doesn't look quite finished...

And I have a rolling garage cart to hold beer and tools.

RSBob 11-11-2024 06:47 PM

Purely for aesthetics and weight loss exactly where you don’t want it. And add crash tubes for even more weight reduction.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1731383030.jpg

Billthebuilder 11-11-2024 07:08 PM

Me puts the lotion on my bumperetts

Balisong 11-11-2024 08:16 PM

Carbone. They were silly money for what they are (light plastic without the rubberized coating). Sadly US cars will still have holes to plug. But I hate the originals so….

Nick Triesch 11-12-2024 03:23 PM

Yup , you can remove them to save on weight but a new Subaru wagon with 3 kids and a golden retriever will still blow your air cooled 911 away!! I leave mine on my Carrera.

hierogk 11-13-2024 05:35 AM

What's wrong with fat bottomed girls?

SpyderMike 11-13-2024 06:17 AM

Ummm, they have fat bottoms? Just guessing...

Ian Comerford 11-13-2024 11:30 AM

Oh dear, what have I started…….

Nothing, they make the world go 'round. (well, at least the rockin world)

Did Freddy ever own a 911? hmmm

Interesting idea, but the numbers would suggest otherwise. The lightest 2025 outback with the highest output engine (260 HP) is 14 lb/HP. An 87 Carrera would be 13.2 lb/HP. Load up the subbie and I think you're going to be at a disadvantage, unless road conditions call for full-time AWD. Watching the dog trying to find traction while whipping through the chicanes will be fun....

porschedude996 11-13-2024 03:59 PM

And there is a whole coolness order of magnitude difference. Subby 2, 911SC 10.

"Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it." - Boris The Blade
🤔

Why? Because they're there. Bumperette is a misnomer (at least on the US cars). At 7.28 pounds per, there's nothing "ette" about them...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1706885484.jpg

IMO they can look "balanced" on a 911 with a tail, especially a Tea Tray.

I'm leaving the bumperettes on my (mostly) stock early '87. Although, from this angle, try not to think "full diaper..."

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1731620562.jpg

I am a bumperette delete guy on my Sports Purpose builds. I like the visual weight reduction and love the actual weight reduction.

Link to that calculation? I'd love to play with that.

Deleting the bumperettes and switching to Euro crush tubes (from US bumper shocks) saved me 17.66 pounds.

As an aside, the stock M491 tail & base weigh 25.66 pounds (14.76 lb base + 10.90 lb rubber lip), not including mounting hardware. How much torque for THAT to change direction?

No, they are not cheap, however, given what I spend on wheels and mufflers, I'm not making any value judgements. They look pretty good on there. I do applaud anyone developing new products for 35 to 50 year old cars that I happen to love tho. That being said, I'm not wild about the Car Bone logo being integrated.

#HPtoWeightMatters My late '87 is 2,678 lbs and 260hp. Such a different (i.e. Sports Purpose) driving experience.

...Until the dog pukes. BTDT with our 100 pound Rhodesian Ridgeback, in the back of our T5-R wagon, on the way to Estes Park from Lyons. Cannot recommend.

I removed them so I can fit my exhaust. 997.2S center muffler

I understand the comments about the weight and aesthetics, but maybe I never really noticed the ugliness of the bumperettes on my own car because of the turbo hips. I keep 'em mainly because this rear-engined car gets driven in LA traffic.

Gbodyfan4life 11-15-2024 03:12 AM

They don’t look as bad on black cars IMO. They don’t stand out quite as much to me.

Kraftwerk 11-15-2024 12:00 PM

Live in NYC..or else I would've removed them long ago...

165hp now feels like 180. 2,223lbs :-)

To be fair there are a lot of other weight saving options done too, but the bumperettes are low hanging fruit (and the euro impact shocks!)

Maybe if it's a WRX. Otherwise no. Have both:)
