Yet another V-1 install thought
Saw this on a M3 guy's page. This piece is made for a BMW, but would really like to get some idea's on a way to put something in the 911.
I know and old thread had an idea of replacing the seatbelt and brake pad wear lights. I do not want to cut my dash or anything. Would rather "add" something in a discreet manner that looks like it came from the factory. Any ideas?

Rear View Mirror
Valentine has a universal rear view mirror with the remote display hidden behind a section of the mirror.

![]() Sorry I got interupted mid post. I have seen the mirror, but they tell me that you mount the actual V-1 unit in the rear window (or in the housing of the third brake light) which sounds like a lot of wiring and to me, I want my unit in the front of the car not the rear. I realize it has 360 degree detection, but they tell you in the directions to mount it high on the windshield and below the sun tint strip for maximum detection. A lot can get in the way if you mount it in the rear window. Not sure where I would mount the V-1 unit, but I like the clean installed look of the remote portion.

One of the guys on the 993 forum on rennlist put the V1 remote display in the tach. If I was to do it, that's where it would go.

My K-40 has the unit mounted in the glove box (sensor in the front bumper) on/off switch in a very "stock" looking switch to the left of the ignition and two very tiny red lights' one on each side of the tach.
I will search Rennlist for that idea. Wonder where he mounted the V-1 unit.

This one is one of the best ones I've seen... A local Audi guy here in Boston makes them. He also made my custom short shifter on my S4.
The slickest I've seen is a company that unfortunately doesn't seem to be able to turn technology demos into a product that had a V1 display that integrated with the information display in the S4... just plug the V1 into the box, and the box between the radio and the instrument cluster. Very impressive, unfortunately it turned into vaporware.

I place mine on the windshield directly above and to the left of the rear view mirror. I receive excellent reception from all sides, even with high back seats and a roll bar. The read out is perfect as it sits just about in the same position as the rear view mirror. I believe taking apart the V-1 will invalidate the warranty, and you would need to take it apart to adapt the front and rear pick-up sensors so you can hide the unit. I really don't see the need for another remote screen when it is easily visible from at the rear view mirror location.

"you would need to take it apart to adapt the front and rear pick-up sensors so you can hide the unit"
- My bet is that you cannot separate the sensors (or Mike V. would have done it already to offer remotes). I suspect that the detection of the slight differences in arrival times times front to rear (which is used to determine what direction the beam is coming from) is so short that the speed of the signal over an 8' separation of the sensors would prevent this spatial detection. I hope that isn't phrased in too cumbersome a fashion, but it's always easier witha blackboard. The Cray machines have the same problem -- that's why they are horshoe shaped and have precise lenths of wire as interconnects. |

I like the idea of no one knowing that the unit is there (like my K-40). The unit itself is sort of bulky and I have seen pictures of Paul's install. Was trying to find out some idea's on how to hide the unit and remote notification button. I like the etched in the mirror, but that does not hide the unit itself.

Somebody ought to make a plastic case that clips onto the mirror and extends in front of it. That's where the V1 ought to be and it would be hard to dtect esp. if someone was standing next to the driver's door.

Check out this Audi install. I think someone posted a link from here but this guy gives a whole explanation on how he modified it to fit.
