Any Advantage to Wider Rims?

Let me be more specific. I was looking at the Toyo Website. I really like the t1-S. Anyway I was looking at a set of 245/45s for the rear of the SC. This is the widest 16" tire they sell.

According to the spec section this tire can be mounted on 8 or 9 inch rims. Does the tire sit differently on either rim? Is there an advantage to the wider 9" rim with a tire this size?

Thanks

Jeff C

Yes. A 9-inch rim is a better choice for a 245 tire than an 8-inch rim.

I have RA1s 245/45/16s on 8s and 9s, visually you can not tell the difference, the only reason for going for a 9 is to get the sidewalls to be more vertical which reduces the roll of the tire, effectively stiffening the side wall.

On the track I do not feel nor see a difference in lap time yet. My skill is not sufficient that it makes a difference.

On the car you can not see a difference either, the extra inch in on the inside when it comes to Fuchs.

Yes, there is an advantage in the larger rim. The larger rim stretches the section width of the tire carcass and at the same time shortens the sidewall. This gives additional leverage to the tire in its action on the chassis. This translates into the ability to feed larger loads into the chassis. i.e.better more direct handling.

Each tire is designed for a range of rim widths and can work to it's utmost at the larger end of the design rim spectrum.

Thanks Guys!

I already own the 9's, I was just didn't want to know it was all about looks.

What's the widest rubber you can/should get under an SC rear arch?

The largest I have heard of is an 11.2" secton racing slick.

The largest normaly used(If you can call this normal) is an 11" cross section 275/40
