exhaust preferences?

I am upgrading to SSI heat exchangers on my '82 SC 3.0 and am stuck on a muffler choice. I have done a search and as a result, have crossed a few (B&B and Fabspeed, among others) off my list. I would like a louder exhaust sound, so I am leaning towards a dual-out muffler. I am between a Dansk and GHL. Has anybody heard both or had experience with the two? Any feedback would help me out greatly.
Thanks in advance.
-Mike

What Mike Z said.

I've tried just about all of the dualouts and GHL was the loudest. My car sounded LIKE A CESSNA when I had the GHL on there, no kidding. Not sexy.

The Dansk is it. Plenty of sound, but it's crisp and unmistakably Porsche.

probably the right attitude.. my new Monty is great.. but the boring low overlap cam castrates the potential of the music.. so if low overlap, go with a sound that's not boring, IMO........Ron

Flowmaster. Less than a hundred bucks, and great sound and performance. I know of at least one reputable Porsche performance shop that won't work with anything else.

JAck, any dyno results you've seen on the flowmasters?

Hugh,
The GHL sounds like a Cessna in that it isn't crisp? Or is it just too loud?

Jack, about the flowmaster, I have heard people talk about these. I went to the Flowmaster site, but I couldn't find one for a Porsche. Do I just need to buy a universal muffler and make one? What is your suggestion? Have you done one before?

Thanks.

I meant "crisp" as opposed to the boomier, bassier, more V8-like sound you'll get from most of the others. The Dansk is "crisp" in that it makes a nice midrange howl, and it's not so loud that you can't still hear the other sweet noises - intake, fan, valves & chains.

The GHL was FULL RANGE, man.. if you want to know what it sounds like, just remove your exhaust system completely, headers and all. That's the GHL sound.. like an unmuffled airplane engine.

I was considering getting a dansk dual out single in stainless steel version coupled with a bursch cat bypass and stock exchangers. What do you think about this combo will I still get some horsepower and better noise.

It is hard to resist the Dask, especially when you can get it from tweeks, it is on sale for $399, other places like performance are over $700.

I've been searching the old threads too for muffler choices to go with SSI's when I get them. All the way back to when MikeZ and Superman were just guest users. There's some good stuff in that vault and funny too.

Porsche Crest SSI's with Dansk 2 in 1 out

So far so good....as I put the SSI's on my 82 SC with the Dansk 2 in 1 out and the sound is purposeful and it's a scream drivng down the parking aisles of a parking garage setting off car alarms. I had to back date the oil line but didn't have to cut the rear valance.

There is another brand out there, Monty, that has had some good press. I'm not sure of the spelling but I think it is just Monty.

Fabspeed builds their systems with Flowmasters, I believe. And it's Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems who claims that he's never gotten better dyno numbers than with Flowmasters.

You buy a mid-80's Camaro model, and let your exhaust shop fabricate the rest. I think my total bill was like $250, including chrome tips.

Montys sound great, but they're loud. I have one on my 2.7 and it's kinda boomy, but sounds awesome when you let 'er rip!

Especially under bridges and in tunnels

I wouldn't put some hashed-up "Camaro" muffler on my car, even if it made an extra 20hp!

The Dansk 2/1 is what Brad Roberts of SSI personally recommended to me. I'm glad I took his advice. Just like Harlan, I found the sound is just right, and I didn't have to cut the valance for another pipe.
If you need more noise, I guess the 2/2 Dansk would fill the bill.

Whatever you decide on, just be careful that your choice is free from resonance in the cabin. Some types resonate (boom) so loudly, they'll split your headbone.
