Pop-out rear window parts questions

Hi all,

I'm in the process of converting the fixed rear quarter windows on my '84 coupe to pop-outs, and am unsure where a few of the new parts go. Below are the pieces I'm having trouble with, listed by illustration number, Porsche part number, and description. The diagram at the bottom is from p. 237 of the 1975-1977 PET (which I used because it was the last year pop-outs were offered)..

This rubber strip (specific to the pop-outs) obviously goes near the front of the window, but it doesn't seem to fit anywhere.

15 - 901-543-493-20 - sealing strip, 13.5" x 1-3/8" rubber

These spacers go beneath the new, wider lower molding. There are 5 screw holes in the molding, and 5 spacers, but the diagram doesn't indicate which spacers are for which holes. The fixed-window molding that I removed had 1 thin spacer under each of the 4 leading holes, but nothing under the rear-most hole. Due to the hand-built nature of these cars, perhaps I need to experiment with them at different locations?

4mm’s closest to the front of the car. Then the 3mm. And the 1.5 at the rear.

In case anyone is interested, I think I've figured out where the sealing strip (#15 in the diagram above) goes. Converting from fixed to pop-out quarter windows requires the removal of the spot-welded strip located along the outside of the B-pillar. Once that strip is removed, the rubber sealing strip is used to provide a seal between the pop-out window frame and the B-pillar. Without this seal, the window frame would be resting directly against the B-pillar. I'll have to cut two slots in the rubber to correspond with the two "hinge tab" slots in the B-pillar.

If anyone has a different idea, I'm open to suggestions.

I've had a few early cars with pop out rear qtr windows. I pulled them to prep for paint on a couple of them. I really dont remember seeing that rubber strip/seal. Keep in mind that it was 40 years ago.......

Thanks, and I hear ya. In 1985, I replaced the rubber around the pop-outs in my '72. I remember it being very difficult (I may not have used lube?), and my thumbs & fingers were very sore, but I have no recollection at all of that sealing strip.

I asked the same question about those seals a year ago, and got zero responses. See the post here if you're interested. Note that my popouts shown in the photos didn't have the outer rubber seal on them in the pics, so the clearance to the B-pillar can be misleading.

What I can tell you, is that I found no use for them when installing the popouts at all. I might have been able to fiddle them in place behind the hinges but didn't bother. The windows do have quite a bit of clearance between them and the B-pillar, so I'm not sure installing them as you mentioned would have much effect.

Regarding the spacers, my PET from 1973 shows them front to rear as 4.0mm (3 pieces per side), 1.5mm (1 per side), and 3.0mm (1 per side.)

Thanks, I appreciate your input. It's always good to have more information. I'm still waiting on a tool I need, so I haven't been able to remove the spot-welded piece to see how the windows fit.
