SC to 3.6 VRam Exhaust Oil Tank Clearance?

I should be undertaking my 3.6 conversion here in a couple weeks after compiling all of the necessary components over the last six months or so. The seller of the engine is also sending an aftermarket exhaust that will work great with the 3.6 Varioram but mentioned I might have to move the oil tank for clearance.

Can someone just QA that the following options are feasible for anyone who has put a 3.6 with non-standard exhaust into a G-Body?

1) Use a 964 oil tank
2) Relocate the SC tank slightly forward with custom brackets
3) Swap to AN fittings and custom lines

Anyone with experience find one solution easier than the other? We've got about 24 hours to get this knocked out middle of July before I'm going to get too busy to touch a project for about two years. So if I need to buy some additional parts I'd like to have them on hand when we drop the 3.0.

Thank you for any guidance!

Dual in/ dual out Flowmaster muffler is much easier.
Mounted at correct angle you can mitigate heat under bumper area.

Pictures of this one? I am looking at changing out my GT3 for something a little less noisy, never seen a flow master for one of your 911's.

Must be some really odd headers to interfere w/ the oil tank, now the oil lines is another story

here are some pics w/ B&B headers and later Fabspeed, the S hose runs quite close to the headers on both so i wrap the S-hose in heat reflective foil.

Flow master muffler ow / B&Bs was very loud, the Fabspeed muffler is perfect.

3.6 with GT headers and a new Dynaflow muffler experiment.
Going to be an AZ registered car in future.

Did some spirited driving today and checked for droning, couldn't find any bad RPM range, it was a concern. Word to describe sound is "throaty"

Took temp readings on the fiberglass bumper and rear reflector mounting plate, hottest reading was 160. Looking to get some thermal protection scenario.

Laying on cool concrete is only good in the summer.

I'm supposed to receive them Monday, I'll post pictures once I get them.

Sounds like the system as described is similar to OE where there are mufflers in the fender wells. Typical 911 layout doesn't get close to the oil tank. We've built custom exhaust systems for every conceivable air cooled engine/chassis combo; the method to a no-issues install is to retain the OE chassis' 911 engine console. The 964 or 993 engine mounts are much larger than that of the 911 resulting in 911 headers and mufflers not fitting. Get rid of that problem and you can use any 911 exhaust system you desire. This issue compounds if transplanting into an early 911 chassis. They already have less room for a muffler than the G-body, add that huge console and what little room you had is gone.

The issue w/ using the 964/993 console and crossbar and tin is that it forces the engine to be mounted ~1.25" lower than in an older 911

the solution is to use a 3.2 console, regular 911 crossbar , regular 911 mounts and custom f/g tin and a single sheave pulley(double sheave may fit, I just haven't done that), Then you can use any 911 exhaust setup as the engine now sits exactly the same as w/ amy earlier 911

I used Sheridan f/g specifically made for this.

Bill,

I知 dropping off the parts and running through them with my mechanic Thursday.

These are the headers. I have no doubt that the 996 GT2 muffler will not fit, but I just want to look at it all together. I知 sure I値l have to get a custom muffler mounted, but it is sitting in my garage for my other project (never do more than one unless someone is paying you) and just want to see.

Interesting, I've never seen a set like that. It looks like they wanted longer primaries than the usual(~30"+/-) and folded the pipes up into the quarter panel space, I'm guessing these were made for a 964/993 where that space is empty and available for exhaust.

Burns makes very nice collectors; it looks like someone put a lot of effort and thought into that system

I've considered the water cooled 911 variants mufflers in the past, they should be useable but would need some custom fabrication.

If you really want to use them, a 964 oil tank is a better choice to install than a 993 but either could be installed in an earlier 911.

i have some pics somewhere, i'll see if I can find them.

Bill, that would be really helpful.

I’ll look into seeing if I can find a 964 tank. Excited to piece this thing together.

here's a 964 tank in an earlier 911

Bill,

Awesome, thank you. I'm dropping off all the part tomorrow and then we'll come up with a gameplan, that might be a solution. Looks like they're about $500, a drop in the bucket for what I now have into this project.
