Injector seal refresh?

After completing a smoke test, I noticed smoke coming from 1-2 of the injector sleeves.

Question:
How difficult is it to remove injectors that are still connected to the fuel lines?
How hard is it to remove the sleeves inside the air intakes without taking off the entire top end?
Best tool for removing fuel injectors for CIS?

Thanks!

The injectors can be hard to pull out of the runners. They have a fat o-ring that seals them in place. If you have an early car with flexible plastic fuel lines you can just carefully pry them out. I used a door card removal tool with a block of wood to pry against (Door card removal tool). I think if you have metal fuel lines they are flexible enough that you can get the injectors out without disconnecting the lines, but I'm not sure.

The sleeves also have little o-rings, but they are staked in the runner. A punch was used at three or four points around the rim of the hole in the runner to pinch the sleeve. Sometimes loose sleeves will pull out with the injector, but you will probably have to grind away the aluminum where the punch was used. Then you have to figure out what to lower down into the sleeve to pull it out.

The sleeves can be brittle, and you have to worry about getting debris down into the cylinder. If two are showing smoke, the others are not far behind. Unfortunately your best bet is probably to pull off the injection and the runners. That way you can push the sleeve out from the underside and you don't have to worry about debris. Do them all. Get new o-rings for all six injectors and six new sleeves/o-rings.
