Chris,
The last one went thru regular rebuilds every 20 or so hours. This one (hopefully) I'll get over 30, we'll see................. |
9000? That's incredible. I'd love to hear the music out of that engine.
|
Juan,
That's what I was figuring. 30 hours out of that highly tuned motor should be great! Do you typically have to split the case on that level of seasonal refresh? |
Juan, being a fellow VINTAGE 911 Racer, I am awe over your engine. What do you estimate the Life span (how many hours before rebuild) of the engine? 30-35 hours. Seems to em you would be going through alot of main bearing or rod bearings with a motor that is spinning to 9K consitantly. We have guys that are running 13-1 compression with pretty much all the same internal components as you without the twin plug, and only reving to 7500-8000 and they are doing preventatitve rebuilds every 35-40 hours.
The CPA business must be good. That sounds and looks to be a $20K motor, if not much more. Do you race with Jack R. from the 901 shop? Last year he and a few guys ventured up to California to race with us. Jack, Mike Scott, Fritz and a few others. Great racing. But unfortunately Jack hit me in the right rear just behind the wheel. He tried to make up about 3 car lenghts under breaking, locked them up and slammed into me. Oh Well, it is racing. Needless to say, it was my first time involved in any form of contact in 5 years. 9000 RPM WOW!!!! |
Chris,
On rebuild we normally open the whole thing up (including the tranny). Main bearings are replaced everytime as they take the bulk of hte beating. On the ugly side this translates to at least $5K/year. Vintage, I do know Jack and 901, actually, he did all the work on the heads, supplied his custom cams, is in charge of final tuning/jetting and chassis setup. Great bunch of guys with a ton of experience. Jack is a very talented driver (so is his son Brady) but, "incidents" do occur. The only time I had contact (really bad) I had just passed Jack couple of turns before and as I was right behind the 1st place Aston Martin (turn 16 at Sebring), the guy hit the kerbs, dumped a ton of oil and my 2 liter became a Six Flags ride instantenously. I ended up, crashing against the Aston, Jack slid around but managed not to hit anythign and went on to win the race. Definitely very talented, nothing is as slippery as Mobil 1 on hot pavement!!! $20K ? Could be a "light" estimate. CPA business good? At elast on my niche it is!!! |
I built such a sheet (I'm an investment banker) based on Dr. Steve's stuff as well,
Hahaha - So did I and so am I. Investment Banker = spreadsheet engineer. |
V911Racer,
Which Fritz are you talking about? |
Juan,
Get some sound-recording equipment into that car, and do it fast! Juan;
Your an inspiration... Sigh... |
Nice job Juan, The engine looks great! so when is the first lap going to be run?
BTW nice choice of gears, I use AFKQV, and have a second box with A GA MSX... Enjoy it!! |
that is going to be one sweet, good looking, and blazingly fast ride!
congrats |
Juan,
I have heard ecurie engineering gets 275-280 hp out of 2.0 liter motors, any idea if this is true. phil |
Phil,
It is true, we had Mark (Eskuche=Ecurie Engineering) build 2 motors for us in the past. They were awesome and never let us down. The only problem is that it is hard to live in Florida and your mechanic in Mequon, Wisconsin... Mark is a great guy and has his "special pistons" which work great. Longevity (tops) 20 hours. By the way, great trackside support as well, their trailer is a rolling shop. I guess I have to get some recordings of the engine's music... More to come, Next phase, how to gain more horsepower (time to diet!!!) Juan |
We'll I say it is true based on my "seat of the pants dyno". Never actually dynoed the motors but they were screamers.
|
CSTREIT.
I have posted a link with results from the race they came to. This is from the PORSCHE only group on Sunday. VARA PORSCHE ONLY RESULTS BUTTONWILLOW 2002 :D Mark Scott #267 |
Huh. Small world Mark!
Fritz is a good guy. Very aggressive and talented driver. I've been chasing his lap times for quite some time now. The white IROC car in this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=124090&highlight=gratta n is his. Quite a nice car really! I'm glad to finally have some 911's back in the big-bore group here in the Midwest. Had to give him some grief about the deadhead sticker though! :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1061909812.jpg Mark Eskuche can really build some motors! Those 2.0L things scream! (Though I doubt I could stomach the 20 hour refresh times) |
Yeah, Fritz is a good guy and a great driver. And yes Mark Eskuche can build some great motors. Brian Oshaughnessy who finished second to Fritz at our race, was actually using Fritzs back up motor. Brian broke his that weekend, and Fritz and Mark were kind enough to let him rent the motor. That thing was a screamer. I think they are coming back up this way in about 4 weeks. We have an PORSCHE event at Laguna Seca that they are supposedly coming to. And on the way up they are going to stop at Buttonwillow again as they did last year. Should be a fun 2 race weekends with them / against them.

Where can I buy one of those yellow engine shrouds?
|
Hey Chuck,
Funny, no one seems to like htem as they denote a lesser engine (red being an S), mine was painted yellow to match the car. Sikkens Base Tint Yellow.... Juan |
Interesting, thanks. I was just searching through the archives about the shrouds. Looks like many choose to paint them.
Then there's that carbon fiber shroud. Hmmm. Motor looks nice, and I second or third the call for a sound clip. |
