Installed New Race Motor
Guys,
Just got back from the shop and the new motor is installed (finally). Some of the specs: PMO 46's Ti Valves/Retainers Cosworth (very) high compression pistons Twin plugged with Electromotive 906 based custom cams Pauter Rods 965 Oil pump Boattailed, knife edged, ... Twin front mounted oil coolers (plus engine mounted cooler) Here's a bad photo of it, more to come later: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/Juan Motor.jpg Could not wait to share it! |
By the way, it is an S engine but I painted the shroud and covers to match the exterior of the car. Perhaps now it is too yellow!
|
OMG, what a work of art. The twin plug ignition looks particuarly nice.
|
Juan,
That is AWESOME. You are my hero. |
This post is useless without a sound clip. ;)
Really though, that is just spectacular!!! Gongrats and more pics when you get a chance. |
Hum, how do I post a sound clip........
|
What was the source of the titanium valve gear?
What do you estimate the "safe limit" or redline at based on this? Dyno #s? |
Juan, that is AWESOME! But we need some more pics! What's the displacement on this thing? -- Curt
|
Congratulations, it looks great! Here is a picture I took last December -- i believe it's the same? if so, pls say 'hi' to Vince & Felix for me!... -Evren

Very nice job! I bet it sounds awesome.

Evren,
It is the same motor; I'll give the guys your regards. John, the Ti valve gear we got from the 901 Shop (Jack Refening) who also supplied the custom 906 based cams and did the performance head work. We are setting redline at 9000 with a cutoff at 9250. Mechanically we should be good for an additional 1K rpms at least. Prelim dyno figures at 250HP @ 7800RPM (gearing has been set accordingly!). Curt, the displacement is 1991cc, so this is your basic modernized 911R or 906 Carrera formula. Basically only modified areas (mostly) for more reliability (electromotive vs. twin distributors), heavy duty rods, ... Better gas allows safer usage of much higher compression ratios than what they ran back then... All this yields approx 40 more bhp than the original (210 @8000) which much improved drivability. Now like on the Oscars: my thanks to Gulf Performance/FVD USA, 901 Shop, Wayne and Pelican, Ollies (case work), Carquip, Powerhaus II (gears and lsd), Steve Weiner/Rennsport Systems, TimT who shared his experience and pointers and, last but not least all the Pelicans who have kept the fire burning. Thanks to all (and all those I forgot). You can see some of the work done to the case on Wayne's engine book (which is very good by the way). More info and photos soon. Coming soon to a race track near you...... Looking for a good sized Pelican sticker or a computer file to properly label the vehicle. |
I'll give you a bit more to see, here's a shot of the ZF type LSD we installed (its a shame you cannot have a "clear transmission case to see all the good parts that went into it!):
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/LSD ZF.jpg Well its not clear but it is a pretty cover for it anyway: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...e plate m6.jpg I won't bore you with pics of each lightweight gear. I'm sure you get the idea. |
What box? AFJOS? I guess it depends on which track.
9250! YES YES YES! |
You tease... I'm getting motor envy.
|
John,
Depends on the track. I have various gearsets laying around in case I need to make any changes. For this new motor, I decided to go with CGaKaQU which mainly maintain RPMs at 6750 when upshifting at 8500. FYI, I prepared a spreadsheet - I'm a CPA - (based on stuff from Instant G, Powerhaus, Carquip plus the factory books) with all the gears available for the 901 to get the different RPM vs speed and shiftpoints. Your car should have a 911 box (I think?) which I'm not sure uses the same gear letters. Anyhow, let me know if you have a use for this or I can run some simulations for you. |
Juan,
I built such a sheet (I'm an investment banker) based on Dr. Steve's stuff as well, but I had to recode everything because the Good Doctor protected all the cells! I would LOVE to see what you have put together, not for today (stock class rules say I have to run A GA O V ZA) but for a future 911R clone. Man, I am excited about your new engine, it is exactly what I want to build, 250 hp from a 2-liter is just incredible. I plan to build a 2.2 screamer for PCA GT-5, this is a great precedent you have set. |
What an incredible motor! I bet it absolutely WAILS at 9K!
Makes me want to do the same to my 2.2 some day. |
Juan,
That's a beautiful motor. Post a sound recording. By the way I tried to e-mail you with the photos, but the mail didn't go thru. The address spelling was wrong. I got it now. |
9k ???
OHMYGAWD! I can only imagine what that things gonna sound like! How many hours did you build it to last? |
Wow:eek:
I share your excitement. Congratulations on the birth (or is that rebirth I wonder) |
