Anyone got a Jacobs ingition system?
I'm trying to figure out how to reinstall the one that was originally on my car before I took delivery of it.
Back story was that I was having issues judging what my rev range was because the tach wasn't working. P.O. had a mechanic put back a stock Bosch coil, which got the tach working. Problem is, between the time I drove the car with the Jacobs system and when I got the car home, it developed a misfire problem under heavy load or high RPMs, and I've had a hell of a time starting the car from time to time. My edjumacated guess/theory is that the plugs were gapped for the Jacobs system, which wants them wider, and they're just not reliably firing with the stock coil. So I've got two problems... First, the mechanic reused the connector that plugs into the distributor from the Jacobs unit when he installed the Bosch unit. Do these just pull off? Crimp on? Are they easily reused? The guy I talked to at Autozone looked at me like I was nuts when I asked if they sold the connectors. Secondly, I've got three units here. Ultra Coil, Emissions Master, and a secondary trigger. No docs. Fun, eh? I gather the secondary trigger usually plugs into the stock coil, and triggers the emissions master to do whatever it is that it does. The P.O. hadn't used it, but had a theory that it'd fix the tach problem because the stock coil would be used. I assume its the ultra coil that allows me to use a wider plug gap, though, right? So if I install the other unit with the stock coil, it won't likely fix anything? So figuring I don't use it, I don't understand how the other two units work with each other, and what (if anything) I can do to get the tach working. Alternately, anyone want a slightly used Jacobs unit so I can afford to buy an MSD? ![]()
