Paint only the hood ?
I got my P-car last September, and I'm rather proud of the improvements I've slowly made in it...
A project I'm considering is repainting the hood. I know a good body shop that has matched older paint for me before, but not 20-year-old Porsche Guards Red paint. You all know how expensive it is to paint the whole car. I don't want to do that. I'd just like to repaint the hood. I'm sure most of the people on this forum have some degree of road rash on their hoods. I have put touchup paint on and it looks pretty good, but I wouldn't mind a complete hood repaint. But...... Any opinions on doing this without painting the whole car?

Why not consider having the shop paint the hood and blend into the fenders. That will refresh the front without having a color difference or the expense of a complete repaint.

Brawlins,
As a result of a recent accident I got my front fenders and hood repainted guards red. The shop replicated the formula used by Porsche and it looks so good I can't tell the difference from the rest of the car. I'll try to post pics soon. |

Looks nice. Especially considering that you have a red car in sunny Spain. Usually they fade in the paint. BTW, just curious, are you going to keep those cookie cutters or are you going for something else? |

I just got the car last year and it came with the Cookie Cutters. The car was delivered originally in Germany back in '83 and AFAIK many German cars had very few options (as opposed to US, or even Spanish delivered cars). For example, I am enjoying A/C-less summer driving under extreme hot conditions (40ºC/105ºF)
![]() I'd love to get some 16" Fuchs, but I am currently in a passive search mode, so if I come across a nice set, I'll go for it. If you ever find some Fuchs and want to trade for my Cookie Cutters just let me know ... ![]() |

brawlins,
I'm in the same situation... '85 factory slant(guards red) with a hood that is showing fade and road rash. The repaint hood and blend fenders sounds interesting in theory.

Thanks for the advice! I'll check with my body shop guy late in the summer (after I pay off my summer vacation to San Franscisco) and see what he'll charge me to do it.

Paco, Your car looks very nice! I was in Madrid a year ago now. I like that 105 degree heat. Need to get back there again and stay at some of the ancient castle Paradors. The AVE train is a blast to Seville, the most beautiful Spanish women work those trains!
IMO Have the hood, fenders and bumpers painted for a consistent appearance. Maybe the mirrors too if they have been peppered with chips.

LOL, you are a tough man Paco.
I spent an extremely pleasant three weeks in San Sebastian a few years ago and loved the place. The days were spent sitting on the beach and the evenings in the bars and resturants. Definetly one of my most favorite places in the world. |

I had a local body shop paint a 914 hood the same color as my body when a Suburban backed over the original hood. Cost about $175 for priming/painting and colorsanding.

I recently had a guy back into the hood of my Guards Red 88 and also did some damage to one of the healight rings. Ended up at a shop that does LOTS of Ferraris (good with red I assumed)and they matched the paint perfectly. There is no way to tell where their work ended and my original paint begins. They even touched up a couple of rock chips elsewhere and now it looks extremely good. FWIW, this cost the insurance co about $1600 and no body work had to be done, only paint scratches. I paid to have the extra chips done out of my own pocket.
