Porsche Crest Carrera=

You do learn something everyday ( at least most days), but somehow I am embarrassed to admit that I only learned this today.
Carrera is spanish for race. I know that cars named with spanish and italian words are fairly common. I don't really know why I didn't know this before except that I don't speak spanish.
Now tell me somebody else out there besides me didn't know this

From what I understand, Porsche named the Carreras after the Carrera de Mexico a big race in (duh) Mexico from the 1950s.

Don't feel bad. Until you mentioned it, I didn't know that you didn't know what it meant.

Correctamundo. David Gilmour and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd drove '52 Jaguars in a re-run of the race a while back. There's a great video documentary of it: http://pinkfloydhyperbase.dk/film/carrera.htm

Jerry- very brave of you to admit it, as it happens I thought they were named after the Carrera Mountains in Italy!
So you have educated me!
there, I admitted it!
And no I don't check my oil with the engine off!

Yes, and the Ford "Cortina"... cortina means "curtain".
Curtains? Oh well (for 3000 Ford factory workers in Genk, yes...)

This is apparently true...

The Mitsubishi 'Starion' was supposed to be called the 'Stallion' but an error arose through the Japanese pronounciation.

Yep, but I think it's actually called the "La Carrera PanAmericana".

I have also always assumed that the Targa was named after the legendary Italian "Targa Florio" race. Can anyone verify that as well?
