You do learn something everyday ( at least most days), but somehow I am embarrassed to admit that I only learned this today.
Carrera is spanish for race. I know that cars named with spanish and italian words are fairly common. I don't really know why I didn't know this before except that I don't speak spanish. Now tell me somebody else out there besides me didn't know this ![]()

From what I understand, Porsche named the Carreras after the Carrera de Mexico a big race in (duh) Mexico from the 1950s.

Jerry- very brave of you to admit it, as it happens I thought they were named after the Carrera Mountains in Italy!

Yes, and the Ford "Cortina"... cortina means "curtain".
Curtains? Oh well (for 3000 Ford factory workers in Genk, yes...) ![]()

This is apparently true...
The Mitsubishi 'Starion' was supposed to be called the 'Stallion' but an error arose through the Japanese pronounciation. |

And how about the Suzuki "Justy"! Right... And the Hyundai "Pony". Yup... I think there was also a Morris "Marina" Nice names, them!

Yep, but I think it's actually called the "La Carrera PanAmericana". I have also always assumed that the Targa was named after the legendary Italian "Targa Florio" race. Can anyone verify that as well? ![]() Last edited by Eric Coffey; 10-02-2003 at 12:31 PM.. |
