I need help reinstalling helper spring, Please
I am trying to reinstall my clutch arm and helper clutch spring and I am having problems.
The problem is that the long arm cannot go all the way to rest position so that I’am able to place the smaller arm onto the shaft. The helper spring is not clearing the SSI’s , the spring is hitting the edge of the SSI and stopping the arm from going all the way back. From all of the pics that I have saw the spring goes towards the SSI HE I have read the post about reshaping or bending the lip of the SSI until the spring clears . I have done this except there is something inside the SSI that is preventing me from reshaping it inward enough. Is there a exhaust pipe in that area that I could be hitting or is it just reinforcement for the shell itself? I don’t want to bend or grind into a exhaust pipe by accident. Is there anything that I’m doing wrong? Thanks Rick 77 911s ![]() ![]() |

Rick,
I had a similar debacle a few months ago. I think there's a way to install the spring passively (the spring is not loaded) and then take a screwdriver and gently pry it forward and it will spring into place (and will be loaded). I'm sure this isn't how you should do it, but it seems to have worked out just work fine for me. Hope this makes sense. Kris

Thanks Kris
But I had the spring in the "unloaded position and then when you use a screw driver to pry back on the arm it will travel back but not all the way, it hits the SSI and then stops! I still need help Please Rick

Rick,
I swear the same thing happened to me! I fumbled with it a bit and decided to muscle it a little more and it popped into place. Give it a try, but be careful not to break anything... ![]()

Okay,
Let me ask this in a different way. I might have the spring on wrong. Should it be towards the ssi in it's rest position? Does anyone have pics of this area while the spring is loaded and unloaded? Thanks Rick

the lip on the SSI needs to be bent flat where the spring rests against it. that's the position it sits in normally, when everything is attached and adjusted. slide the long arm onto the shaft in it's forwardmost position and at the same time, guide the hook of the spring over the pivot pin on the bracket that bolts to the side of the trans. when the arm is all the way on, use a long screwdriver to pry the long arm to the rear and up against it's stop. the prying tool is inserted about center on the arm, right next to the curve of the spring, it's tip against a hump on the bellhousing. it is also a good idea to hook the clutch cable into the hook on the arm before prying it back. saves hassle later when the cable loop doesn't want to go over the hook. then install the short arm, readjusting the bolt/nut as necessary so it clears the bolt. then the pedal height is adjusted by the two nuts on the sheath, and the t/o bearing clearance by the bolt/nut on the arm.

Yes, as John Walker says, bend the lip on the SSIs. I had the same problem. If you looked closely at the clutch adjustment -- I think-- section of 101 projects you can see the SSI flange was ground down at that point.
RoninLB had a more elegant solution, for which he kindly provided the detailed photo, bend the lip as John says. If you cut the lip, it looks as though you will go into the welds and create an open seam on the SSIs -- not the end of the world, but not as good as folding the seam and saving the welds. Good luck. I got it figured out.
Boy do I fill stupid! There is a part missing on the tranny. There should be a stop bracket mounted on the tranny next to the pivot pin for the spring. When installed ,it will stop the long lever from going too far backwards. Since mine is missing , the long arm was actually going back too far ,which in turn I was trying to place the short arm on but it was either too far from the long arm or it would not even go on the shaft because it was not clearing the long arm. So I started bending the SSI to hell and back but with no positive results. I stopped for the evening and had a beer to regroup my thoughts and started on it this morning , it took about two minutes this morning to figure it out. Go figure Now I just have to find the part that is missing When in doubt have a beer and sleep on it. Thanks to all that responded Rick
