HID lights for '84 to '87?
Are there any aftermarket HID headlight kits available?

Any high wattage bulbs and/or upgraded housings are going to tax your headlight wiring. The failure point will be the headlight switch itself since it has all the current running thru it. Not a matter of if it'll happen. It's a matter of when.
The solution is to install relays that will remove the high headlight current from the switch and route it thru the relay itself. You then can safely upgrade your bulb wattage and get better lighting. Best way to do this is the Euro version H4 lights with higher wattage bulbs. I got the H4's, 100W high beam/90W low beam German Narva bulbs (thanks RoninLB), high wattage bulb sockets, Ancor marine grade wire for everything beyond the fuse panel, Bosch relays, circuit breakers, black PVC sheathing, and heat shrink terminals to do my job. Kinda overkill, but it ain't gonna fail me any time soon. That's for sure! My lights rock compared to the old original H5's with stock bulbs. I laugh everytime I drive at night. Those H4's with 90W lows (technically illegal) light up the road excellently. And when you hit the high beams? Wow. Really bright.

There is an HID kit that matches the round sealed beam that is used in the early Carrera's not sure if that ran through '86 or '87, but yes, there is a single round sealed beam HID kit.

Sylvania has their Xenarc HID system. I believe the 911 kit is on backorder. Check their website and also look for a thread on HIDs on the Rennlist 911 boards.

I spent about $250 for my set of H4's with bulbs and wiring adaptor, installed them in under 30 min. and it was the BEST upgrade I've done (and you guys know I've done a few of them). Kevin is right - they rock! My H4's outshine my 993's stock lights and I shall be putting HID's in it soon. BTW, I added the relays when I did my H4's - cost $20. Again, SUPER UPGRADE. H5's suck!

I borrowed a friend's Audi A4 for 6 weeks this winter. His car has HID headlights and after using them I decided I didn't like them. The "cutoff" is too sharp making it difficult look/see past the headlights.
They do look cool though... -Chris

The 80/100s on my H4s way outshine the hid lights on my pop's 2000 Mercedes S500. Plus if you convert to lamps with hids, you will loose your high beam.

Yes, the HIDs are the technology used on many new German and highend Lexi, etc. The ones on my boxster were great but I don't have that car now. Big advantage is that they have an ultra sharp cutoff on low beam so you can see w/o blinding others. High beams on Boxster were not HID, so check that on the aftermarket lights.
If you really want to flood the road with light on hi beam, get some H1's with the high output, nuclear Xray bulbs. |

I've got the H1's on my '86...if you go to slow with the high beams on they will actually melt the pavement in front of you
