One of the reasons I bought my first 911

About a year ago I bought a VW GTI 337 edition. Lot's of neat stuff on a limited edition car, big brakes from the Audi TT, 6 speed, BBS wheels, special suspension, Recaro's. So I had a deposit and was waiting for the car, and my friend at work had a kinda rough 80 911 SC. I was contemplating bailing out and going for an older 911. He let me drive it; I thought, " this is kinda primitive, sure feels unlike anything I had ever experienced". Anyways, it was not the best example, and I stuck with the GTI, taking delivery.

BUT, a bug was planted. The GTI was nice. Too nice. Too modern. Too slick. I spent a lot of time on the big VW forum (VWVortex). I also started spending time on the Pelican 911 forum and Rennlist. It was like a sub-culture, these guys talking about these cars with air cooled boxer engines. I noticed a big difference in the types of discussions and level of civility. The VW was too much like a Honda, and the forums were more focused on silly things like shift knobs and billit oil fill covers and flaming. Not all bad folks, but in general, not the kind of folks I'd want to hang with.

So I started researching the 911, in books and on this web site, which really made a difference. I poured over all the technical articles here too. I came to the realization that these cars are built like a Rolex watch. And I love to tinker and turn wrenches. So one day I decided to sell the GTI and take 1st year depreciation loss. It was not easy.

I started looking for a 911. Drove a 78 SC with 215k miles. God, it felt so strong. I had to have one, but something a little newer. I was willing to go out of state, but found an 86 coupe about five miles from my house. 65k miles, a clean history and some nice upgrades. He had two other P cars and was really happy to see stay local and have a good home. Driving a 911 is not a passive experience. The saying goes, "YOU drive IT". It's not like driving a toyota. It's like taking up downhill skiing. Hearing that beast in back fire up really is exciting. I've got a lot to learn. It's gonna be a fun journey.

So that's my story. Thanks, Wayne and everyone else on this forum.

So have you got a new shift knob yet. I think I saw one with led's that light up different colors

Awesome, sounds like you get it, so many others don't.

Glad to have you in the club.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Board, Do you work at Concept 2 or just have one and use it?

I'm a rowing coach and I recognized handle.

I've had several Porsche's so let me know if I can help with anything.

Dave

Welcome. I am new, too. My car of choice? An 81SC with 100K bought in L.A. and drove cross country back to Detroit. And I still have my Scirocco 16V with all the goodies, but not for long. Funny how I just can't seem to turn a wrench on that after getting my SC. I LOVE IT!

Hehe. Joncj8989, funny signature. I feel lucky, my Porsche indulgance counterbalance was 'only' a new Jetta bought by my wife.

Great story--a very common one among the owners in this group. We try something else with the 911 haunting our minds and tugging at us without even knowing it until some event/experience pulls the veil from our eyes and the 911 stands there alone with great clarity screaming "here I am, take me home"

Noticed your White Lake location in another thread and found this post. You did my idea - buy in Southern California and drive back to Detroit. I *almost* have my wife convinced this is a good idea.

Did you find the car on the 'net first, or just go around until you found one you liked?

Jens UK. I wanted a 911 and most the good ones seemed to be out there. Not too sun baked, not rusty, not a million miles. I found one on ebay with a slantnose turbo 964 body and the price was lowered twice and the second time it was I wrote him and bought it. He is somewhere on this board, but he recently got a bad rap in a thread from 2 people.
But when I saw all 40 pictures and talked with him, we sealed the deal and we flew out and drove back. PLane fair on Spirit was like $170. Funny that they charded me $50 for the pooch to be my carry one. Haha, she was only 4 pounds and didn't eat a dinner! Anyway. A whole lot of risk on that ebay transaction, thank godness it pretty much worked out.

I think the next car I buy will be from CA or NV or AZ. I hate this rust belt. It SUX. Especially for daily driver cars.

I've been on Whitmore lake a few times in the past year, my parent-in-laws always take their boat their.

I also had a 16V Scirocco. Very fun and fast car. I mean Real fast! It just was not great for a tall person like myself (6'2"). Had to put the seat back and had NO headroom. Hated the front wheel drive. And, kept nickle and dimeing me to death. My 911 is actually much cheaper. I just have a thing for German cars. Wife hates me. LOL.

Chihuahua? Our little guy is at about 4 lbs right now.

I haven't let him into my BMW yet; my wife will have a field day if she sees others are letting dogs into 911s.
