930 A/C Questions
My wrench tells me that the clutch on compressor of my 911 is frozen. He believes that enitre compressor needs to be replaced because of this. My question to the experts here is this: 1) does the entire compressor need to be replacee or can the clutch just be replaced? 2) whats the cost for a clutch only? and whats the cost for a full compresor and clutch? How much labor is expected?
3) are the compressors in the 930 and the 911 different? The system has already been converted to R138 Thanks for the help.

What compressor do you have? If it is the 10P15C Nippo then you can replace the clutch only and the part should run in the $125-160 range. Labor to replace about 30 minutes. Compressor and clutch remanufactured will run around $200-250 for the compressor and use a new clutch. With the new compressor you probably need a new dryer and of course evac/recharge.
Good luck,

If the compressor itself is frozen, you need a new compressor, not a clutch. You may want to have your wrench clarify.

Never hear of a clutch being frozen, clutch do go bad, but when they go bad, they usually don't engage the compressor. I think your mechanic meant to say the clutch won't turn so the compressor is frozen so you need a new compressor.
Little irony in terminolgy, the only time a 911 a/c is frozen is when the compressor is no good. |

I think Ruf is right. It sounds like you may have compressor "black death," where the compressor basically melts down. If that's the case, then the entire system will have to be flushed, and the compressor and receiver/drier replaced.
Contact Compressors International. As I recall, they charged me about $180 last year for an overhauled compressor and a clutch (exchange). (If your compressor has succumbed to "black death," you won't be able to exchange it, and you'll have to buy one outright.) Good luck.
